Thoughts On Friday! July 27, 2007
Here goes…
- I am speaking this Sunday…I can’t wait…I’ve been off for three weeks and I feel like I am about to explode.
- Bob is one of the most innovative guys I have ever seen…after seeing this post I am inspired and am going to make my own iphone.
- Jonathan had this post on his site–DANG! I love the church!
- Charisse is ONE MONTH OLD TODAY! (Picture coming later on today or tomorrow!) She’s awesome…and is still taking a pee on Lucretia and I as often as she can!
- I was putting Charisse to bed the other night and right before I put her down she looked at me with her beautiful eyes and I just could NOT put her in bed!!! Dang!!! I am so in trouble!
- We had over 230 high school students at Fuse this past Wednesday night which is amazing because – #1, it is the SUMMER!!! #2 – Last year on that date we had 126 students, that is amazing!
- I HATE credit card companies–I have three credit card offers on my desk right now and they are going in the trash. Proverbs 22:7 is TRUE…credit card companies HAD me at one time–but not now!
- We already have over 200 people registered for Unleash in March of next year–that blows my mind. And in this post Tony let us know that we actually have two people registered from England!
- Scott Hodge had a boy…actually his wife had the boy…congrats guys!!!
- My friend Jon took this picture (courtesy of Tony’s blog) while in Seattle last week…after taking the picture he gave the guy $5 for his creativity.
- We are about 90% sure we have a secure place in Greenville for our satellite campus…more details to come later…PRAY HARD…this is exciting.
- Seriously–NewSpring–we all have a front row seat in what I believe is going to be one of the biggest moves of God in this state–possibly the Southeast! Yes–those are big words–but YES–He is a BIG GOD!!!
- I have noticed a post or two by pastors on the net claiming to be original in all of their ideas and I started to do a post about it…until Steven beat me to it–you can read his thoughts here. I AGREE!
That’s about it for now…I can’t wait for Sunday!
Baby Farts, Publix, An Awesome Message…and other random stuff… July 15, 2007
OK…so here are a few random things this Sunday evening before I head off to bed…
Random Thought #1 – Charisse farted on me the other night! I am sorry…I know many of you do not like the word “fart,” however, there is no other word to describe what she did. She had literally just blown her diaper up and I was cleaning up the mess. While I was wiping away she ripped one off and it was the grossest thing I have ever smelled–I nearly threw up–on her!!! BUT–i love her, gross farts and all–she’s my girl!
Random Thought #2 – Since I am trying my best to serve ‘Cretia I did the grocery shopping this past Saturday. It was one of THE most intimidating things I have ever done. Lucretia had done all of the grocery shopping since we have been married–and I thought, “How hard can this be?”
SO…I walked into Publix with my pen and my very detailed list that ‘Cretia had made for me. I think it took me an hour to pick up 17 items…part of that was my fault–I spent WAY too much time at the ice cream freezer trying to decide. AND…IT HAPPENED…I just threw random stuff in the buggy that looked good!!! NEVER go to the grocery store when you are hungry!
When I left the employees, about four of them, smiled at me and told me to come back–somehow I think they knew I was a shopping rookie!
Random Thought #3 - Steven preached for us at NewSpring today! I will have to say that it was one of the best talks I have EVER heard–I was both challenged and encouraged…and I believe with all my heart what he said about our church–that our best days are ahead of us. Tony posted the video we opened the service with on his blog here…and the message will be on our website by Tuesday evening.
The phrase he used today that God used to rock my world is, “God’s promise is bigger than your perhaps.” DANG…thanks Steven for bringing it today!!! I know God is going to continue to do great things through you in Charlotte.
Random Thought #4 - Pete Hise from Quest Community Church in Lexington, KY came into town today for one of our services. From time to time pastors from other churches will come to NewSpring to hang out and then I will take off after a service and grab a meal with them. Tonight Pete and I went to Outback and spent three hours discussing leadership, the church, family and a host of other things. God is doing some incredible things in his church…and I left this meeting SO encouraged. He and I asked each other a lot of questions–it truly was iron sharpening iron–I had a blast.
Random Thought #5 – It is hotter than hell in South Carolina–Tony has a picture here to prove it.
Random Thought #6 – Summer Blockbuster begins tomorrow for our elementary school kids…I wish I had been a part of a church when I was a child that LOVED children as much as our church loves them. By the way…a church that loves kids will spend money on them and WILL NOT send them door to door on Saturday mornings with Krispy Kreme doughnuts while hundreds and thousands of dollars collect interest in some stupid cemetery fund!
Random Thought #7 – The comments regarding the post about buttpaste have been awesome–thanks! :-)
Monday Morning Reflections July 9, 2007
SO…last night I didn’t do my normal Sunday night reflections…so I thought I would try to recall was has happened since that time…
- I stubbed my toe on a chair in our living room–it hurt, REALLY hurt; in fact, it made me want to say not nice words. I don’t care how much you love Jesus–IT HURTS!!!
- Charisse keeps taking a pee on me!
- The response to this post about an opening in my area has been great…so I’m told. Anyway, if anyone is still interested we are accepting resumes through tomorrow. Go to the link at the beginning of this point for more information.
- YES…that WAS a waterfall in our atrium yesterday. Wasn’t it awesome? Actually–we had a problem! We put a live snake in the water on Saturday and when we came in Sunday morning we could not find it. Oh well–no one got bit.
- The thing about the snake in the point above isn’t true–I just made that up! :-)
- Alden, our middle school pastor, did an INCREDIBLE JOB yesterday…wow…God spoke to me out of that message. We have some REALLY talented people on staff! And if you thought Alden’s sermon was good–you should see him do ballet!!!
- The thing about Alden doing ballet–yeah–I just made that up too. Actually, the thought of Alden jumping around in a pink tu-tu just made me throw up a little bit in my mouth!
- I just changed out the bag in our super duper diaper genie–I had no idea such a beautiful little girl could poo poo so much!
- Speaking of beautiful–if you didn’t get to see her picture on Friday after she got a bath you can go here and scroll to the bottom!
- My journey through the Bible is ROCKING my world…I am in the books of Psalm and am amazed once again at how honest and transparent David was with God!
- Psalm 46:10 is HARD to do!
- This post by Scott–followed by this one is a MUST READ for every pastor!!!
- I HATE to admit this…but–I bought a Q…yes, I have entered the world of smart phones. I love it so far…please don’t hate me!
- Wednesday’s post is really funny! At least I think it is–well, I laughed a lot when I wrote it!!!

It’s A Wonder I Survived! June 7, 2007
In received an e-mail from a friend several years ago that I have kept because it just cracks me up every time I read it. I thought I would share it today…I think most of you will love this!
People over 25 should be dead. According to today’s regulators and
bureaucrats, those of us who were kids in the 40′s, 50′s, 60′s, or even
maybe the early 70′s probably shouldn’t have survived.
Our baby cribs were covered with bright colored lead-based paint.
We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets, and
when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets. (Not to mention the risks we took
hitchhiking.)
As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags.
Riding in the back of a pickup truck on a warm day was always a special
treat. We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle.
We ate cupcakes, bread and butter, and drank soda pop with sugar in it,
but we were never overweight because we were always outside playing.
We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle, and no one
actually died from this.
We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then rode
down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the
bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.
We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were
back when the streetlights came on.
No one was able to reach us all day. No cell phones. Unthinkable!
We did not have Play stations, Nintendo 64, X-Boxes, no video games at
all, no 99 channels on cable, video tape movies, surround sound, personal
cell phones, personal computers, or Internet chat rooms.
We had friends! We went outside and found them.
We played dodge ball, and sometimes, the ball would really hurt.
We fell out of trees, got cut and broke bones and teeth, and there were
no lawsuits from these accidents. They were accidents. No one was to blame
but us. Remember accidents?
We had fights and punched each other and got black and blue and learned
to get over it.
We made up games with sticks and tennis balls and ate worms, and
although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes, nor did
the worms live inside us forever.
We rode bikes or walked to a friend’s home and knocked on the door, or
rang the bell or just walked in and talked to them.
Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who
didn’t had to learn to deal with disappointment.
Some students weren’t as smart as others, so they failed a grade and
were held back to repeat the same grade. Tests were not adjusted for any
reason.
Our actions were our own. Consequences were expected.
The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke a law was unheard of.
They actually sided with the law. Imagine that!
This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers and problem
solvers and inventors, ever.
The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.
We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how
to deal with it all. And you’re one of them!
Congratulations. Please pass this on to others who have had the luck to
grow up as kids, before lawyers and government regulated our lives, for
our own good…..
Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors?
Friday Mind Dump… June 1, 2007
Here goes…
- I am getting a haircut today! YEAH!
- MAYBE while I am in Greenville I will find a Starbucks…there ISN’T one in Anderson! I know, I know, one is coming…the way things are looking I am thinking that Jesus will actually come back to earth before a Starbucks makes it to A-town!!!
- My posts this week on being fat generated a lot of e-mails. Let me just say this…to those who let me know you are trying to lose weight…GO FOR IT…you can do this!!! Once again–it is a spiritual issue that will take will power.
- I sat at a round table yesterday will Bill Hybels. That dude blows me away…here he is, the “guru” of church leadership…and he spent a lot of time asking questions. I wrote down in my notebook, “If I ever think I have arrived & don’t need to learn anymore…I’m done!”
- I wrote down in my notebook this week, “What if the church ever truly understood that EVERYTHING we do is a reflection to a lost world of who Jesus is?” That question is something I have wrestled with all week long…and I hope it dominates my thinking for the rest of my life.
- The temptation to get into a blog fight was very real yesterday…some dude e-mail me (anonymously) and misquoted Scripture in an attempt to attack NewSpring. However, I was reminded that the enemy is NOT a blogger or an e-mailer…the true enemy is satan…Paul reminds us of this in Ephesians 6:12.
- THAT is the reason I do not get involved in e-mail wars and blog debates anymore. I am sick and tired of Christians standing around seeing who can pee the furtherest…hell is a real place…I really don’t want people to go there…and my focus is going to be on seeing people come to Christ and NOT Christians who seem to think they already have it figured out anyway.
- My body is STILL recovering from a really “brilliant” idea I had this past Monday of going for a long run at a fast pace. NOT SMART!!!
- I am REALLY looking forward to speaking on Sunday! A week off from speaking is SO refreshing.
- I finished the messages for The Gauntlet (our youth beach camp) this week. DANG! I am SO PUMPED about getting to hang out with our teenagers for a whole week. AND…the hotel we are staying in has a Starbucks in the lobby!! :-) I am so happy!
- Lucretia and I are getting more and more excited about our little girl arriving on scene!!! People are asking & so I will go ahead and shamelessly say that we are registered at Babies ‘R Us…you can check it out on-line if you would like.
- A church planted e-mailed me yesterday and told me that he has a chance to buy a mosque in his community. That would be incredible!!! I am praying for this dude…but I will not break his story here because I want him to have the opportunity.
- I am going to wear shorts today…and I think I have the whitest legs in the world! No, wait–that would be Jon McDerment…I have the 2nd whitest!!!
Have an awesome weekend!!!
Sunday Night’s Thoughts… May 27, 2007
So here goes…and then I am going to bed!
- I didn’t speak today–but Brad Cooper, our high school pastor, did an incredible job. It made me think back to my very first sermon…it was eight minutes long!!! Way to go Brad, you did an excellent job.
- It was 17 years ago today that I met Jesus–I would never have thought He would have blessed me the way that He has…EVERY GOOD THING in my life is the result of knowing Him.
- I can’t wait to speak next Sunday…we are going to be continuing the series with a two part message on a passage of Scripture that has often been misunderstood…and EVERYONE is familiar with it.
- Still no signs of Herman…BUT…a female turkey was seen this week in my backyard–MAYBE Herman will show up again now!!!
- This past Wednesday and Thursday I hosted a pastor’s round table with 10 other guys who I really admire, it was an awesome time and I felt that Jesus used those two days to stretch all of us. I LOVE these environments!
- Steven came down today for our 9:15 worship service…and then we went out for lunch. I LOVE this guy–and I believe that he is one of the best young leaders I have ever met.
- The fact that I am going to be a dad is more real today than ever before–HOLY COW!!! Please pray for ‘Cretia and Charisse.
- Is NASCAR really a sport?
- Why did the Braves get HAMMERED today?
- I said this on Friday…but have seen it over and over again…as Christians we are called to give our VERY BEST to the Lord–IN EVERYTHING. And so…that means the church should be offering Him our very best as well–IN EVERYTHING.
- John 2:5 is one of THE best verses in Scripture…and I am TRYING to apply this daily.
- I had lunch with my pastor on Friday, the guy who was serving at the church where I received Christ in 1990. He has been in the ministry for 42 years…and I sat for two hours and asked him questions as to how I can set myself up to finish well…I don’t want to just go hard for awhile and flame out…I want to make it for the long haul…and God used this man to both encourage and challenge me. More on this later…
- I loved this post by Tony
- And then check out this post on his blog if you think you might be interested in working at NewSpring.
I hope you have a great day!!! Check back later this week as I will be hitting a subject that MOST PASTORS won’t touch…it will get tense around here…BUT…I promise, what the Lord has put on my heart NEEDS to be said…can’t wait!!!
