How Do I Listen To God?  Part Two

Sep 3, 2008

Here we go with a few more things I am learning (didn’t know the first one was going to be that long!)

I = Inquire Of Godly People

One of the things I’ve seen all too often is that when a person wants to walk away from God and do things that are clearly contrary to what they know is right…that they will often seek out people that will affirm their disobedience and tell them what they want to hear rather than what is right.

God speaks…and He’s used the words of godly people on more than one occasion to encourage and rebuke me.

And…we KNOW THIS!  Many times I have found that when I DON’T necessariy want to ask someone’s advice on something it’s because I KNOW what they are going to say…and it isn’t what I want them to say…so I just don’t ask them & think that it will all just go away.

Who are the rock solid people in your life that love you enough to speak truth to you?  God WILL speak through them!

S = Spend Time In His Word

I once heard a pastor say, “When I can’t hear from God I read from God.”  SO TRUE…God’s Word is always God’s will!

Hebrews 4:12 says the Word of God is living and active…that means it is just as alive today as it has ever been.  And, the truth is…you and I will never be able to fully hear the voice of God if we are not investing time in reading His Word.

One of the stories I tell when speaking on this is a time when we were praying through whether or not to build the building we are currently in and leave Anderson University.  I was in Haggai that morning and I begged God to show me what to do.  So…

  • I asked God, “Do we REALLY need to build the building?”  And then I read Haggai 1:7-8
  • I then asked, “OK, well…how in the world are we supposed to pay for it?”  And then I read Haggai 2:8
  • I had one more question, “Lord, what are you going to do when we get there?’  And then I read Haggai 2:9

So—we obeyed…and God has continued to BLOW our minds.  (Yes, that is a true story!!!)
