A Letter From Pastor P To NewSpring Church November 30, 2010

Howdy NewSpring!  I wanted to share five things with you on this Tuesday as we begin to prepare for this incredible Christmas season.

#1 – We were praying for incredible things during our, “Man Versus Wife” series…and once again we saw God do Ephesians 3:20 size miracles right in front of our eyes.

  • Between 350-400 people surrender their lives to Christ over the past seven weeks.
  • It’s the first time in the history of our church that we’ve averaged over 12,000 people for a series.
  • We’ve seen hundreds of first time visitors at every campus (because found people find people…you guys have done an incredible job bringing people to church!)
  • We’ve seen countless numbers of couples come forward and seek help for their marriages.
  • We’ve seen people begin to deal with addictions and past sins.
  • We’ve seen marriages restored; in fact, there have been quite a few couples that were divorced that actually got back together during the series and have made plans to try to work things out!

Thanks again to everyone who prayed for big things in this series…thanks for those who served (saved people serve people) every week…thanks for those who gave financially (I can’t out give God) so that we could do the direct mail piece that reached over 1 million people.  Thanks to everyone who has reached out to couples who you know have been struggling in their marriages and began to help them (I can’t do life alone!) AND…thanks for those who began to focus on their RESPONSIBILITIES rather than their RIGHTS in their marriage–I’m praying the Lord will continue to refine us all in this area…because…Growing people change!

#2 – THIS SUNDAY we begin a brand new series on the subject of HOPE!  I heard a statistic the other day that absolutely wrecked me…it was that nearly every year there are as many suicides in December than there are January through November!  WHOA!  In the month that we celebrate the birth of Jesus there seems to be less hope…that shouldn’t be!  For the next four weeks we are going to dive into the Scriptures and talk about HOW to get our HOPE back…and how to share this HOPE with a world that is more desperate for it than ever before.

(BTW…this Sunday is one of “those Sundays” that I don’t think we’ll ever forget as a church!)

#3 – Christmas services this year are going to be AMAZING!!!  I’ve seen reports over the past few years that indicate that people are more likely to visit a church at Christmas than any other time of the year.  AND…knowing this here at NewSpring Church we’ve always gone all out to do everything possible to use this time to present the Gospel in a way that is clear and understandable.

I honestly believe that this years presentation is going to be one of the clearest, most powerful presentations the Lord has ever led us to present.  So…I’m asking all of you to…

Pray like crazy every single day from now until then…asking God to draw people to church and change lives!!

Get a ticket for you and for the people you are inviting.  Here is our website that lists our service times for every campus…(you can also get your tickets here) and we’re asking everyone to get a FREE ticket (and use them to invite people to church with you during that period.)  AND…bring your ticket back to church with you when you come to the service…we will be taking them up at the door and then doing a drawing (during every service at every campus) for a free ipad!!!

#4 – And…FYI…because we are putting SO much time and energy into our services for Christmas this year…we will NOT be having church on Sunday, December 26th.  We are giving our amazing staff and volunteers that Sunday off to relax, enjoy time with their family and get ready for 2011…which is going to be an amazing year!!!

#5 – THIS SUNDAY officially begins our Christmas offering…as I’ve been saying for several weeks…I would love it if each of you will pray and ask God, “what would you have me give?”  If you want some Scripture to read through as you pray I would highly recommend II Corinthians 8 and II Corinthians 9.

Love you NewSpring…can’t wait for Sunday…the best is yet to come!

Unleash Early Bird Rate Ends TOMORROW! November 29, 2010

OK…so our UNLEASH early bird rate ends TOMORROW!  (Which would be Tuesday, November 30th!)

As of right now it is $39 per person to attend.  We purposefully price this particular conference low every year so leaders can bring as many staff and volunteers as possible.

And it has completely sold out for the past three years.

On Wednesday the price goes up to $59 per person (which is still cheap!)

But…today and tomorrow you can register for, once again, $39 per person.

It’s a one day conference with a main session in the morning, followed by a breakout session THEN lunch (which is provided in the cost of the registration), followed by another break out session and then concluding with a main session in the afternoon.  (We are usually finished around 5 or 5:30!)

This year I am hosting a lunch with the 10 pastors who bring the most people with them (as well as the guys who are in my coaching network in the spring.)

You can find all of these details PLUS register right here!

Can’t WAIT!!!

Can We Stop Bad Mouthing The Future Of The Church? November 24, 2010

Here lately it has been quite popular to question the future of the church!

  • “The way we’re doing church is not going to always work.”  (DUH!)
  • “Got to invent new ways or we are in trouble.” (DUH!)
  • “The next generation is going to reject our methods of doing church.”  (DUH!)

I could go on and on; however, I am finally coming to the conclusion that the church is going to be fine if she will continue to focus on Jesus, preaching His Word, doing ministry in power of Holy Spirit, praying like crazy, refusing to be boring, continuing to take huge steps of faith and practicing extreme generosity!

The church will not just “survive,” she will THRIVE!

When she gets pushed underground, she flourishes.

When she gets hit in the face she always gets back up!

She is still God’s plan!

She is still beautiful!!!

And when she’s hitting on all cylinders…there’s nothing in the world that can compare to her power and potential!

Yes, the WAY we do church WILL change…

And…we don’t need to FREAK OUT about that fact OR how in the world the next generation will do church…they’ve always discovered what it takes to reach their own kind!!!

We just need to FUND IT instead of fight it!  (Ripped that off from Andy Stanley!)

My job isn’t to figure out how to do church for the next generation…it’s to do life and ministry in the context of which Jesus has called me to do these things…and to allow the next generation to stand on my shoulders and take the church places that me and the people in my generation never DREAMED it would go.

Jesus said HE WOULD BUILD HIS CHURCH!

It’s in HIS hands…I would say that it is going to be ok!

A Letter From Pastor P To NewSpring Church November 23, 2010

Howdy NewSpring Church…here are a eight things I wanted to share this week…

#1 – Sunday was one of the most intense messages I’ve EVER preached at NewSpring.  AND…I’ve got to be honest, it is never really easy for me to preach a message like that because, well, every pastor wants to put a nice bow on the end of his message…you know, sort of resolve the tension and make everything nice and neat.  However, the reality is that if a person is considering an affair (or in the middle of one) and/or if a single person is getting serious with someone they know they should not be with…then the tension is both good and necessary.  My prayer is that through Sunday’s messages affairs are avoided, sin is confessed and relationships are restored.

#2 – I’m really excited about this coming Sunday as Lucretia, my AWESOME wife, will be joining me on stage to do a live Q & A about marriage and relationships.  You will be able to text in your questions from every campus and we will do our best to answer them.  I have been SO looking forward to this week and my bride joining me to teach.  Hope you are making plans to join us.  (AND…by the way, we are doing every service live…that means we will be live in the 4pm service in Anderson.)

#3 – I had a conversation this past Sunday at the Anderson campus that absolutely BLEW ME AWAY.  A family approached me after one of the services and told me that had began attending NewSpring after receiving the direct mail advertisement about the series…and that they had been incredibly blessed by it.  THEN then parents walked away and their 8th grade daughter whispered to me, “Thank you for doing this series, my parents marriage was really struggling and now it is so much better.”  WOW!  When the kids begin to see the parents marriage improve that is awesome.

#4 – Columbia campus did not reach 1k this past weekend…which means I do not have to wear a Gamecock T-shirt and cheer for them in the SEC championship.  (WHEW!)  BUT…I am SO proud of our Columbia campus…they are averaging over 900 people for the past couple of months, which is absolutely amazing considering they are only a little over a year old.  God has AMAZING things to do through that campus…I can’t WAIT to see what happens next down there.

#5 – Greenville campus…for those who attended the first service there this past Sunday, I am SO SORRY that we lost the video feed during the service.  (AND I am SO proud of our staff and volunteers and the way they handled the issue.)  It’s been so long since something like that has happened…and we’ve done our best to try and identify the problem and get it handled.  The way we are doing video campuses has taken us down a road technology wise that very few people have traveled down…and we are learning as we go.  So…we appreciate your patience with us as we learn…and know that we are always doing our best to make sure something like this doesn’t happen.

#6 – As I said Sunday…I’m asking everyone in our church to pray and ask God what HE would have us give for our Christmas offering.  It begins on Sunday, December 5th.

#7 – Tickets for our Christmas Eve services as well as service time will be announced this coming Sunday at every campus.

#8 – I hope you all have an amazing Thanksgiving…I love you and it is an honor to serve as your pastor.

There’s More In You Than You Know (A Post By Lucretia) November 22, 2010

Lucretia, my wife, recently had the opportunity to preview the new Disney movie “Tangled.”  Below are her thoughts…wow…I LOVE MY WIFE…her insights are GREAT…

Mid October, I had a very special opportunity to go to Disney Animation Studios to see the movie Tangled, based on the Rapunzel fairy tale, and meet with the producer, directors, and animator for Rapunzel. What struck me most about the film and those directly involved with its making was the heart behind the movie.

Tangled is Disney’s 50th full-length animation but has taken a long and complicated journey to its completion. Glen Keane, the animator of Rapunzel and original director of the film, first started developing the idea for the movie in 1996. The official proposal to Disney was done in 2001. Disney was in favor of the film but wanted computer generated animation rather than hand-drawn. The technology was not really even available at the time to make the quality of movie envisioned so Keane undertook the challenge to create a CG film where the “computer bends it knees to the artist” and becomes a “pliable pencil.” Further changes ensued in 2006 when Disney merged with Pixar and Keane merged with John Lasseter to work on the movie. In 2008 Keane had a heart attack and directing duties were turned over to Byron Howard and Nathan Greno, but Keane remained on as animation director. Earlier this year the movie Rapunzel was renamed Tangled and had only 40% animation done with only a few months left before deadline for completion. Well, I can definitely say that Tangled has been a labor of love and not something Disney simply rushed to completion simply for the sake of profit. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie and felt that the effort and heart that went into it shines through.

As a Christian, I appreciated the experience on an even different level. Within everyone is something missing that only Jesus can fill. That is the way we were made. I also believe that for boys there is a constant longing and questioning of the heart to know that they are man enough and have what it takes. For girls, that longing / questioning is to know that we are beautiful and worthy of the time and pursuit for relationships. It is a part of who we are and were created to be. As daughters of The King, girls have the heart of a true princess within each of us. We know deep down that we were created for something more. Why do little girls want to dance with daddy, twirl in dresses, and wear sparkles? Why are fairy tales so appealing? The whole princess thing is part of our God design and heart. I have such a heart for girls and am selective about what I expose Charisse to. I cannot wait until she sees Tangled as her first theater movie! This movie really does address the heart issues of both boys and girls – you do have what it takes and you are worthy and beautiful – there is more in you (than you know).

Tangled is a great family fun movie with action, adventure, romance, comedy, and a not-so-evil bad guy. Disney was very successful in making a fresh and modern fairy tale that also taps into its classic roots. Look for Pinocchio and familiar book titles in the pub scene as well as subtle references throughout the movie to other Disney classics. The village scene is designed after Fantasyland at Disney Parks. There are timeless truths and issues of the heart addressed – dreams, family, sacrificial love, redemption, a longing for something more, potential within that must come out, and the courage to reveal your true self.

Flynn Rider is a worldly thief with a back-story who is the key to freedom for a sheltered girl with unlimited potential and magical hair. The story is about their adventures and growth as individuals and a couple. The ”bad guy“ is a vain and selfish mother figure who steals and then imprisons Rapunzel in order to stay young and “beautiful” forever. And of course, there is the chameleon and guard-dog horse as the comedic animal sidekicks as well as an eclectic group of pug thugs. And, you must not forget the frying pan. Tangled has such a depth of story and characters that I cannot wait to see it a second time with my family!

The highlight of my trip was getting to know the animator for Rapunzel (and Ariel, the Beast, and Aladdin) Glen Keane. Keane’s story of becoming a Christian and how that impacts his animation was incredible. He really has an amazing story and seems to have an amazing heart to go with it. We all went “ahhh” when he told how he became animator of Ariel. He was assigned Ursula because he always did big bad guys. He heard Jodi Benson singing “Part of Your World” and was thinking about the longing and being made for something more as in earth and heaven rather than sea and land. He went to his boss and requested to change to Ariel. The boss questioned whether he could draw pretty young girls. His wife was his inspiration for drawing Ariel who was the first Disney princess that really spoke to my heart (I was about 16 yo.) and is Charisse’s favorite. The Beast, especially the transformation scene, was his story of the change that Jesus worked from within to without in his own life. You can definitely see his heart come through his characters.

Keane also talked about the journey of creating the character of Rapunzel. She is an uncontainable, irrepressible young girl of enormous potential who has something special placed within her that must come out. His daughter was his inspiration. Rapunzel’s unofficial motto is ” plus est en vous ” which is French for ” there is more in you (than you know).” It reminds me of Ephesians 3:20 which is special to me personally. Keane came across that saying early in her character development and it was part of shaping Rapunzel. Keane gave his insight into 3 different parts of the Rapunzel movie and the spiritual truths that they conveyed. The opening scene is representative of James 1:17. The scene where Rapunzel heals Flynn’s hand is being the unique individual God created you to be and revealing your true self to others rather than just trying to fit in and be like everyone else. The tragic and climactic scene in the tower towards the end shows the power and “magic” unlocked by true and sacrificial love from the heart. It also brings the story full circle back to the opening scene referencing James.

There is such attention to detail in this movie. Keane’s daughter who is also an artist did the artwork that became Rapunzel’s mural in her tower. If you look closely, you will notice that the drawings begin near the floor with very child-like drawings and get more sophisticated the higher they get as Rapunzel grows taller and more talented. The animators took painstaking detail to make sure that the facial expressions and emotions portrayed were modeled after actual small muscle movements of the human face. The 3D (I only the saw the movie in 2D and was not sure about the 3D aspect of the film) feature I was assured was carefully done to subtly draw the viewer into the film rather than have the film jump out at you. The lantern scene, based on actual lantern festivals from Southeast Asia, is supposedly incredible in 3D. The scene was inspired by Lasseter’s 20th wedding anniversary trip to Tahiti where a husband of an Indonesian woman gave him and his wife a lantern to write a note on and send off into the night with a kiss. The music is also wonderful! Alan Menken who was the genius behind The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast does not disappoint. When Will My Life Begin? is the song of Rapunzel’s heart. The haunting Healing Song is in regards to the magical hair. Mother Knows Best is the villainess song. I’ve Got A Dream is the fun pub song that unites all of our hearts regardless of your past. The Kingdom Dance is a musical montage of happiness. And, the highlight is I See The Light duet with Rapunzel and Flynn in the lantern scene. Below are links to two songs from the soundtrack that are paired with film footage released from the movie:

For anyone uncertain about seeing Tangled, I hope this helps. I am not a movie critic but do not think this one will disappoint. I really appreciated my behind the scenes look at Tangled and Disney Studios and wanted to share it with you. It is reassuring to know that there is still value placed on family fun and biblical principles. After all, all truth is God’s truth. And, if you want to send a message to Hollywood that family films with Christ-like morals and values are in-demand, then seeing the movie on opening weekend (November 24-28) speaks volumes with opening weekend box office sales.

As a doctor, I do believe in an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. As a Christian, I believe it is so much easier to teach God-esteem, your worth in Christ, and becoming who He created you to be as well as seeing yourself as He sees you as special and created with a purpose and a plan early on rather than dealing with all the issues that result from never believing God’s truths about yourself. What if every parent gave their children a biblical view of themselves? Maybe our children would have the inner strength and confidence from Christ within to make better choices more in line with God’s truths about themselves rather than Satan’s lies. What if we believed that about ourselves? Like everything else, it more an issue of the heart. And, there is more in you (than you know)… because God placed it there and He wants to live inside your heart and unlock that unlimited potential!

Three Quick Things… November 22, 2010

I know it’s Monday…but wanted to share three quick things…

#1 – If you are a pastor or a ministry leader…heck, this is actually for anyone that has EVER dealt with stress, anxiety, fear and frustration…so much so that it has actually consumed you at points in your life…then I HIGHLY suggest that you listen to Mark Driscolls message entitled, “Jesus and Anxiety.”  In my opinion…it is one of THE BEST messages I’ve EVER heard on the subject!  You can listen to it by going to itunes, go to the Mars Hill Church: Mark Driscoll audio podcast and download it…or you can visit their website and view the message here.

#2 – Another reminder that the deadline to get the early bird rate of $39 for Unleash ends NEXT Tuesday.  (After that the price goes up to $59 per person.)  We are anticipating this conference will reach capacity this year earlier than it ever has…this is based on the fact that we’ve NEVER seen this many people sign up SO early.  So…here is the website where you can register.  Don’t wait!

#3 – I put this on twitter last night…but am asking here on my website for all of you to please keep my friend Clayton King in your prayers.  His mother had a massive heart attack last night (Sunday) and went on to be with Jesus…and while Clayton and his family are rejoicing in the fact that she is now with the Lord there is still a lot of hurt in a time like this.  So…if you could lift him up over the next few days I would appreciate it so much.

What’s The “One Thing” That Is Holding You Back? November 18, 2010

The story of the Rich Young Ruler has always seized my attention.  (You can read it in Mark 10:17-22)  Jesus told him in verse Mark 10:21 that there was basically ONE THING that was holding him back from being His follower.  (And the guy was unwilling to give up that one thing!)

I’ve been in ministry for about 20 years now…and through my personal experiences and with what I’ve seen in others I’ve basically identified four “one things” that commonly hold people back.

#1 – Money – Jesus said that money is the number one competitor for our hearts.  (See Matthew 6:19-24)  Paul gave specific warnings regarding money (I Timothy 6:6-19).  And…we know from the story that this was the rich young rulers problem.  We cannot be fully committed followers of Christ if greed is the obsession of our hearts.  God is generous…His followers should be as well.

#2 – Anger/Unforgiveness – What Jesus said in Matthew 6:14-15 does not get a lot of press, but the importance of His statement is VITAL and ESSENTIAL to you and I having a dynamic, victorious walk with Jesus.  He flat out said that if we do not forgive, we are not forgiven.  (Also see I John 2:9-11)  We cannot pursue Jesus with all our hearts if bitterness and unforgivness dominates our minds and hearts.  One of the things that we miss so often in reading the book of Job is that God DID bless Job and more than restore all that he had lost…but He did so AFTER Job forgave and prayed for his legalistic friends who had done nothing but tear him down for days!  (See Job 42:10).  MAYBE the reason you cannot move forward in your walk with Christ is because you are not willing to extend the same forgiveness you claim that God has given to you.

#3 – Unconfessed Sin – Is there an issue that God keeps coming after that you refuse to let go of.  Remember…He will RELENTLESSLY pursue your heart, not your behavior.  AND…to KNOW Him intimately is to obey Him immediately!! We’ve GOT to remember that “delayed obedience” is radical disobedience.  If He’s coming after something in your life it is only because He wants to replace it with something better.  (Read Mark 10:17 again and notice that the Bible specifically says that Jesus LOVED this guy…and out of that love He came after the idol in the guys life!)  My advice here would simply be to let go of whatever He’s after…AND…if He’s clearly spoken to you about an issue then just do what He says…He’s not changing His mind!

#4 – An Ungodly Relationship – You cannot pursue an affair and pursue Jesus.  You cannot have sex with someone you are not married to and pursue Jesus.  You cannot date someone that Jesus says not to date and be close to Him.  Some people have their identity in who they are dating (or having sex with) rather than Christ…and this ALWAYS destroys our fellowship with Him.

I am sure there are other things that we all deal with…but these are four things that so often hold us back from being who God wants us to be!
