A Repost–15 Things Chris Was Wondering April 12, 2010

Chris Elrod is a friend of mine and had this post on his blog the other week about 15 random things he was wondering about…I loved it and asked for permission to repost it on my blog…and he agreed (thanks Chris.)  Some GREAT thoughts here…

There is some stuff I just cannot comprehend.  Try as I may to get it…it doesn’t make any logical or Scriptural sense. Here is a partial of things I do not understand.

  1. Folks that show up to church only a few times a year but expect the pastor to drop everything to provide them with his undivided attention.
  2. People that put nothing in the offering plate but still have the stones to expect that their opinions on the church should count.
  3. Parents who ground their children from church or the youth group…the very things that could help them with their behavior, future and afterlife.
  4. People that expect the pastor to tolerate their political views…but leave the church because of his.
  5. The occasional volunteer that expects the church to throw a parade in their honor just because they finally did what the Bible commanded.
  6. People that have basked in the grace of God…but fail to give grace to anyone else.
  7. Pastors that leave one church for another…for better pay.
  8. The need for church growth plans, programs, books, conference, seminars and resource kits…when we already have the Bible
  9. Women that tolerate their husbands having multiple affairs…”for the sake of the kids”.
  10. Pastors that would rather be political pundits or civil rights leaders…instead of just preaching the life-saving message of the Word of God.
  11. People that have one spiritual standard for their pastor…and another for themselves.
  12. Folks that think the word ‘disciple’ is a noun…and not a verb.
  13. People that make comments about needing to go “deeper” in God’s Word…as if there is a Scripture in the Bible that isn’t deep.
  14. Pastors that think accountability means never asking them the tough questions or taking the hard line when it comes to their failure to follow Scripture.
  15. Men that think being the head of the household has something to do with the amount of money they are bringing in or the title they acquire at work.

Sunday Night Reflections April 11, 2010

A few thoughts on a great day at NewSpring Church

  • God changed the message for this weekend on FRIDAY…to be honest, I am always nervous when He does that!
  • BUT…He also CHANGED around 80 people today as they crossed over from death to life…THAT never gets old!
  • The issue of salvation was not meant to be confusing but comforting…we can KNOW that Jesus lives inside of us and that we have eternal life (See I John 5:13!)
  • Meeting Christ = Change…Period
  • There is not one example in the Scriptures of someone who met Christ and did not change!  (Though there are PLENTY of examples of people who were AROUND Him but did not embrace who He was; therefore, they were never changed!)
  • Today we talked about the Apostle Paul…he HATED Christianity…resisted it with all that he had…met Jesus and was COMPLETELY changed!
  • Meeting Christ = Change…Period.
  • Someone cannot meet Christ and remain the same!!!  (BTW…meeting Christ is not praying a prayer where you say you don’t want to go to hell…but rather confessing Him as Lord and surrendering EVERYTHING to Him.)

I could go on and on about the message today…but honestly, I am more tired right now than I can remember being in a while…the message will be available on Tuesday on our website and on itunes if you would like to hear it.  I am SO pumped that so many people met Christ today…and now I am going to go and celebrate with my pillow!  :-)

Pain–Part Three April 8, 2010

My last thought for this week on the subject of pain…

#3 – Pain Can Be God Testing Us

Everyone LOVES to talk about the blessings of God…but there aren’t a lot of people that want to talk about the times of testing that He sends our way.

I caused quite a stir one time at a gathering when I said, “The size of the vision God will give me is directly related to the amount of pain and discomfort that I am willing to endure.”

It’s quite ironic to me that people who claim to follow JESUS believe that He will always lead us away from (and protect us from) pain when the very path that God had for Him led Him to be crucified.

Leaders…its quite simple…if you and I are going to accomplish anything significant for His Kingdom then we’ve GOT to learn to deal with pain…

Moses did…he dealt with being lonely, with feeling overwhelmed, with a “church split,” with his own brother and sister rebelling against him…and yet God used him to lead one of the greatest movements in the history of the world.

Paul did…he was beaten, stoned (the old fashioned kind!), shipwrecked, betrayed and eventually murdered…and yet God used him to lead the greatest church planting movement known to man…and we still read his writings today.

Jesus did…we ALL know what happened to Him, how jealous, self-righteous people had Him beaten and murdered, how everyone in His inner circle abandoned Him in His greatest time of need, how He was betrayed by one of His closest friends…and yet He stayed faithful to the Father and finished the work God had assigned for Him.

Enduring great pain will often lead to tremendous progress.

Unfortunately in today’s Christian world there are too many people who run from pain rather than enduring through it…

  • Three or four critics arise in a church and the pastor entertains leaving because it is the easy thing to do rather than picking up his staff and fighting the wolves.
  • God calls a dude to start a church…but he refuses to do so unless he has $250,000 in the bank, five full time staff members, an excellent location and the best sound system that money can buy.
  • A confrontation needs to take place…which will require a VERY uncomfortable conversation that may place a friendship on the ropes.  Rather than dealing with it a person chooses to avoid the potential of pain and merely pray that God will “get their attention.”

I could go on but I think we all get the point…the calling and anointing of God are very real…but they are given to us NOT so we can necessarily have the easiest life imaginable but rather than so we can KNOW that as WE DO WALK THROUGH THE VALLEY OF THE SHADOW of DEATH that HE IS THE AUTHOR OF LIFE…that He is with us, will never leave us or forsake us…and HE who called us will finish what He started in us (Philippians 1:6).

Sure, we all think we can be considered trustworthy by God to handle any blessings He wants to throw our way…but are we trustworthy enough to handle the pain that may be associated with those blessings?

I’ll say it again…enduring pain will often lead to tremendous progress.  SO…for those who MAY be about to give up because the pain is SO intense…don’t give up on the God who has never given up on you…allow the pain to make you better, not bitter…and hold on because if He can trust you with pain then He can trust you with the provision He is about to bring your way!

Pain–Part Two April 7, 2010

Often times people think of pain within Christianity as the “judgment of God” and falsely believe that if we are doing everything right then nothing bad will happen to us.  (The only real problem with this thought is Jesus did everything right and wound up on a cross!)

BUT…pain isn’t always a bad thing; in fact, there are four things I am discovering about pain through this process…

#1 – Pain Is A Powerful Reminder

Honestly, when I first signed up for this marathon in Nashville I thought, “I am going to DOMINATE this thing.”  I had gone on a couple of really great pre-training runs and was feeling like I was unstoppable.

Then “pain” came into my life and reminded me of how human I am…reminded me that I am getting old…and reminded me that I wasn’t as good as I thought I was.

The same is true in my walk with Christ…many times He allows pain to come into our lives to remind us that we aren’t as good as we thought we were…and without HIS help, HIS anointing and HIS favor we are absolutely screwed in regards to doing something that will have significant and lasting impact.

I know from personal experience that some of the most painful experiences I’ve had in life and leadership have driven me to my knees in desperation for God…and through that pain I saw the endless possibilities of a God who is all-powerful and unstoppable!

Pain is a reminder that I am not Sovereign–He is–and that I desperately need Him!

#2 – Pain Is A Strong Signal

When pain hits it MUST be examined…the worse thing a person can do is ignore the signals that the body is so clearly sending.

When my achilles first began hurting I tried my best to pretend it wasn’t happening…until it began to hurt so bad that it caused a noticable limp.  (And then people began asking me, “Why are you limping?”  I tried to deny that I was…but other people aren’t as stupid as me!)  I finally realized that my body was screaming at me, “HEY IDIOT…you can’t continue to run like this, something has GOT to CHANGE!”)

Like I have said before–pain does not always equal punishment–in my case it was my body warning me that if something did not change then real, serious pain was heading my way!

God often uses pain to get our attention…and to ignore the pain isn’t “playing tough,” its “playing stupid.”  I once had a friend who had a car where the check engine light always came on…and so in order to ignore it he finally put black electrical tape on his dashboard over the light…I guess he figured if he didn’t address it then it was not real.

BUT I’ve discovered that ignoring pain isn’t the best way to deal with it.  Sure, there are times that we’ve got to “play hurt”–but EVERY TIME we experience something painful we should ALWAYS stop and ask, “Is Jesus trying to tell me something with this?”  Addressing the painful issue that He brings to our attention will often times prevent a full blown breakdown in the future!

Pain–Part One April 6, 2010

Well…I’m officially NOT training for a half-marathon anymore…

Back in December I decided to try to do a marathon again (my first one didn’t go so well…you can read about it here if you would like!)  AND things were going great until towards the end of January I began to have some issues with my achilles on my right foot.

What kind of issues?  Uh…it freakin’ hurt…a lot!!!

SO…I backed off and it began feeling a lot better…until I began running again.  SO…I told myself that maybe the whole marathon wasn’t such a good idea…and that I could just do the half marathon and try for a really good time.  I took a week off from running and rested my foot really good and was feeling pretty good about my decision…until…

I went for a seven mile run.  The run itself was awesome; in fact, I ran my fastest pace ever–BUT when I finished my right achilles felt like it was ON FIRE and I literally limped around for the rest of the day!

I thought that maybe it was because I had pushed it too hard…so a few days later I tried to do a lighter run…and four miles in I was begging God to allow the rapture to take place because there was serious, intense PAIN…once again in my right achilles.

SO…I finally had to face the fact that I can’t run the half marathon this month.  It’s disappointing…it’s frustrating…but my body is sending me very clear signals that what I am doing isn’t what I’m supposed to be doing!!!

I’ve learned three lessons about pain through this experience that I will be sharing tomorrow and Thursday…

Five Quick Thoughts On Monday Morning… April 5, 2010

A few things I wanted to say to our church after a great night of sleep…

#1 – THANK YOU to everyone who took the time to volunteer this weekend!  I am constantly overwhelmed at the relentless passion that our volunteers show week after week.  As I always say…a church is not effective when the pastor ministers to the people but rather when the body ministers to the body…and this weekend SO MANY OF YOU served Jesus by serving others…and heaven is going to be more crowded because you took the time to do so.

#2 – We had nearly 3,000 children show up this weekend (all campuses combined!)  WOW!  What pumps me up about that is the fact that their first memories of church aren’t necessarily going to be “sit still and shut up or you get a beat down when you get home!”  BUT rather they were all engaged with teaching on their level that focused on Jesus…and in 10-20 years they will be leading the church!  Our ceiling is there floor and it is an honor to allow them to stand on our shoulders so they can do things with His church in the next several decades that we could never even imagine.

#3 – As I said in my “Sunday Night Reflections” post–keep doing what it takes to get people to church.  Don’t give up on someone because they didn’t come…or they came but did not receive Christ.  Every week we are going to go all out to make sure the Gospel is clear…it’s not just an Easter thing for us…and there are SO MANY in our communities that still do not know Christ!  Remember…we are not a megachurch, we are a micro-church with a MEGA VISION!

#4 – It is NO accident that we saw over 200 salvations and a record attendance after a week dedicated to prayer and fasting!  My prayer is that we, as a church, will always stay desperate for God and dedicated to God so that HIS Kingdom will become more dominant in the communities in which He has planted us.

#5 – My prayer as of late for our church is that we will experience an AWAKENING!  Jesus didn’t die on the cross so that we could have nice church services…but so that mankind could be reconciled to God.  I am literally praying that God will move on all of our campuses in such an undeniable way that ALL of us are stirred up to live out John 13:34-35 every single day of our lives…NOT just on Sunday!

Sunday Night Reflections April 4, 2010

What a weekend…

  • We saw around 200 people surrender their lives to Christ…that NEVER gets old!
  • Had over 16,400 attend NewSpring this weekend…fyi that is MORE than attended the 10 year anniversary service @ the BILO Center!
  • THANK YOU to everyone who stepped up this week and invited people to church…seriously, you guys went ALL OUT and God’s Kingdom was enlarged this weekend because of it…now…
  • Be sure to invite them BACK for NEXT SUNDAY’S services!!!  :-)  (Seriously…don’t let Christmas be the next time you talk to them about coming to church!)
  • AND…for those who invited and the person you brought did not receive Christ–read and memorize Galatians 6:9…and don’t give up!
  • This was my favorite Easter weekend at NewSpring EVER!
  • Jesus paid an UNBELIEVABLE PRICE to send and UNDENIABLE message!
  • The cross is the exclamation point at the end of a sentence where God is screaming, “I love you, have a plan for your life and will do whatever it takes to get your attention!”
  • I loved preaching on the cross…but I literally became overwhelmed several times this past week while preparing…really examining what Jesus went through so that we could be reconciled to God is a MAJOR eye opener!
  • Jesus didn’t die on a cross so that we could have nice jewelry…but rather so that we could be made right with God.
  • The tomb IS empty…Jesus IS alive…we CAN be made right with God–and THAT message taught by unschooled, ordinary men (Acts 4:13) turned the world upside down!!!
  • I loved focusing today not just on WHAT the Easter message is all about…but WHY it matters!
  • Yes, I was serious about HATING peeps!!!  No lie…just seeing them brings out a rage in me that is unexplainable!
  • Yes, the story about Charisse explaining the digestive process and using the word “rectum” was true!
  • Yes, the HORRIBLE story of me saying the incredible insensitive thing to Lucretia about the ice cream is also true…definitely not my proudest moment as a husband!
  • I’m REALLY excited about celebrating 10 years of marriage THIS THURSDAY…still can’t believe she married me!!!  WOW!
  • Next week we continue the series we began today by examining I John 5:13 and answering the question, “How Can I Really Know That I Have Eternal Life?”

Hey NewSpring Church…haven’t said this in a while…but wanted you to know that I absolutely LOVE serving as your pastor!  I still remember our first Easter services we had…there were around 150 people in a room singing and celebrating, and NO ONE in that room had any idea that 10 years later we would see what we saw today!  He is a God who has WAY more in mind than we do…and if THIS was Easter in 2010…what will Easter in 2020 look like?

We’ve seen Him do SO much…but there are SO MANY MORE people in our communities that need Christ…and while we will always celebrate what God has done will not stop seeking Him in regards to what else He wants to do.  He’s not through…He’s just getting things started…and I can’t WAIT to see what happens next!
