Four Dangers Of Leadership Part Four – Misc. October 16, 2009

#4 – A Few Other Thoughts…

Today is Friday…so I thought I would conclude this series with a few other bullet points of the dangers of leadership…

  • Loving the church more than you own family…and sacrificing them, justifying it by saying Christ will make up for your shortcomings at home.
  • Not asking for help…and allowing the load to completely crush you.  (You are NOT a super hero…stop trying to be!)
  • Allowing the weekly attendance to set your mood for the week.
  • Thinking that everyone who begins to journey with you will also cross the finish line with you.
  • Not trusting others because you’ve been burned in the past.
  • Believing the lie that you can’t be friends with the people that you lead.
  • Being more obsessed with who links your blog or retweets your twitter than doing ministry.
  • Expecting people to do what you think they should do rather than speaking your expectations to them.
  • Trying to handle conflict through email!  (It DOES NOT WORK!)
  • Believing that just because a program worked in another church that it will work in yours.
  • Thinking that the next series is the key to unlocking the growth engine in your church.
  • Believing that you are not successful because you don’t have the largest and/or fastest growing ministry.
  • Not taking your calling seriously (Hebrews 13:17)
  • Not taking God led steps of faith.  (Hebrews 11:1)
  • Living for the applause of men and not the applause of heaven.
  • Not getting enough rest.
  • Not dating your spouse.
  • Not coming to Unleash!  (Sorry…I had to throw that one in there!)
  • Not fixing our eyes on Jesus…who called us…equipped us…empowered us…enabled us to do what we do.
  • Giving up when He has PROMISED He will carry on to completion what He began!  (Philippians 1:6)

Four Dangers Of Leadership Part Three – Pride October 15, 2009

#3 – Pride

(Yes, I know that I wrote about pride a couple of days ago…but I felt like it deserved a lot more attention because of the danger that it really does present.)

Pride is something that God hates…and yet as leaders we are all SO IN DANGER of being lured in by it’s grasp.  (James 4:6, I Peter 5:5, Proverbs 8:13, Isaiah 13:11, Daniel 4:37)

Here’s the tricky thing…when someone says, “You are not humble” and you respond by saying, “yes I am,” you lose!  (I dealt with that in this article I wrote several months ago!)

Pride is tricky…it tells us the game is different for us, that we do not need to be serious about any sort of integrity because, after all, this ministry would not survive without us!

Pride tells us that we are always right and “they” are always wrong…and so we must attack and tear apart because if everyone were more like us then the world would be a perfect place.

It tells us to treat the staff as servants and not friends because, after all, all of them exist to help me build my Kingdom…not serve with one another to build His.

It tells us that we should be more concerned with the national audience and thus preach and lead for them instead of THE CHURCH that God has given us direct stewardship over…thus the obsession becomes being “discovered” by the world and not being “developed” by Jesus.

It tells us that more and more pictures of us all over the church and the website is a good thing because, after all, it is important that everyone understand who we are.

It tells us that speaking truth isn’t popular; therefore, it is extremely important to keep certain people in the church happy–thus causing us to “respect” them so much that we actually disrespect Jesus and His call on our lives.  (Jeremiah 1:17)

It tells us that we have arrived, that we are above certain people, and that if our ministry is larger than theirs then we can’t learn anything from them.

It tells us that we are actually the smartest person in our church/organization…thus causing us to walk into meetings with our minds made up, totally neglecting the fact that God has surrounded us with collective wisdom that far outweighs our gifting and experiences.

It tells us to listen to EVERYONE…and to let the opinion of those who know us the least shape us the most because, after all, we just want people to be happy.

It tells us to not submit to any type of authority whatsoever because we know better than “them!”

It tells us that the reason we are experiencing success in ministry is because WE are THAT good…not because HE IS THAT GOOD!!!

It tells us that we can’t admit that something is wrong because it will make us look bad…and that can’t happen because our image is way more important than the church!

It tells us that God actually owes us blessings and favor.

It tells us that the reason God is blessing us more than others is because we are more godly than they are.

It tells us that we are experts and deserve to be treated as such.

Pride is a LIAR…it is DECEPTIVE…and every leader has been bitten by it MULTIPLE times.

II Corinthians 4:1 has been HUGE for me in my battle with pride…it is through HIS mercy that I have this ministry…

  • His mercy pursued me when I ran from Him.
  • His mercy rescued me!
  • His mercy called me!
  • His mercy gifted me!
  • His mercy blessed me!
  • His mercy surrounded me with people smarter and godlier than me!
  • His mercy has opened doors for me!
  • His mercy is THE REASON that I have ANYTHING good in my life.

Pride is lethal…we can’t allow it to take us captive and drag us down…there is just too much at stake.

Eight Things I’m Excited About October 14, 2009

Hey NewSpring…just wanted to give a quick update on some things that are getting ready to take place around here…I’m excited about…

#1 – Our band is going to do a LIVE CD RECORDING on Friday, October 30th at 7:00 here at our Anderson campus! It’s going to be open to anyone who wants to come…no tickets or anything…first come, first serve.  It is our goal to NOT let it be just a recording for our CD…but a WORSHIP EXPERIENCE that won’t be forgotten!  SERIOUSLY…you should make plans to be here…EARLY!  (No childcare…if you have a kid and want to bring them…bring them.  If not, hire a sitter!)

#2 – Our mission trip this Saturday that I talked about in this post. People are stepping up and saying, “YES!”  We can’t ask God for opportunities to serve Him if we aren’t willing to jump on the ones He so clearly puts in front of us!  We had two buses chartered to take a crew down…but the response has been so great it looks like we are going to have to get a third!!!  Let us know ASAP if you want to go – hello@newspring.cc

#3 – THIS SUNDAY (DUH!) as we answer the question, “What happens to you when you die?”  Everyone loves studying about THE end times…but what about OUR end times?

#4 – Lucretia’s pregnant!

#5 – The rumors that will be started because of what I wrote above…because, she’s not really pregnant…I am just curious as to how many people stopped reading and began calling and emailing “the news” without actually finishing the blog post!  :-)

#6 – The 10th anniversary in the BILO Center…ONE church service, 15,000 people…it’s going to be amazing!

#7 – The series, “Don’t Get Married Until…” that will begin on Sunday, November 1st.

#8 – Unleash sign ups are WAY ahead of last year…SO looking forward to what God is going to do!!!

Four Dangers Of Leadership Part Two – Ignorance October 14, 2009

Danger #2 – Ignorance

One of my biggest downfalls as a leader have been the times when I have assumed to know the ENTIRE story simply based on a SMALL PIECE of information, thus causing me to pass judgment because I thought I knew it all.

It’s sad…but ignorance is running rampant in Christian leadership circles.

Recently I have seen a lot of people take shot at some of the pastors of Outreach’s magazine’s list they came out with of the fastest growing and largest churches in America…and its been heartbreaking because of what has been said about many of the leaders on that list.

Here’s the deal…I know a lot of guys on that list…and they really are men who are in love with Jesus and really are more concerned with REPENTANCE than ATTENDANCE.  They really do love the church and the Gospel and are trying to fulfill the Great Commission…but because they are seemingly experiencing some success people want to take shots at them.

(WHICH…is CRAZY!!!  The church seems to be the only thing in the world that, if one is successful, people attack and demean it rather than celebrate it.  AND…doesn’t Scripture clearly say in MULTIPLE places that we are to make known what God has done and is doing among the nations…and celebrate HIS work LOUDLY!!!  “Christians” don’t celebrate with others well…but unfortunately we do “mourn” pretty good with others!)

If the church can’t celebrate…who can?  I think we live in a sad day when church leaders will show more excitement over a sports team winning an eternally insignificant game than a church that is seeing more and more people come to know Christ!

Leaders–we can’t assume to know the whole story if we don’t actually know the whole story!

I’ve got to be honest here…the complete ignorance of the statement, “well, if people are coming to that church and it is growing then they must not be preaching the truth” has always blown me away because, well, because of the BOOK OF ACTS!

The disciples preached the “truth,” proclaimed Jesus…without fear or without shame…and THOUSANDS of lives were changed!  (And, in contrast…the religious system of the day happened to be the ones not seeing the results, thus launching them into jealousy!)  Just because a church is growing doesn’t mean they aren’t preaching the truth…it might actually mean they are preaching more truth than you!

Leaders…we can’t pretend to know everything about a church or ministry leader because of a five minute YouTube clip…or ONE blog article…or because someone who knew someone who was “there” told us what happened.

Let’s just make the committment to KNOW what we’re talking about before we talk about it…and let’s not assume to know someone if we don’t actually know them!

Four Dangers Part One – Jealousy October 13, 2009

I had a blast at Catalyst last week…the leadership environment was thick and I was able to learn so much just from “random” conversations that took place in the hallways.

However, the more I began to reflect on the conference the more I thought about leadership…and the dangers that are associated with it.  Thus…this week I will be writing about four that will ALWAYS be on a leaders radar…and we must always be willing to fight against.

Danger #1 – Jealousy

Every leader, at some point along the way, will be tempted to be jealous–period.

Being a leader often means that we are out front…and when we see others get out in front of us many times the result is NOT celebration but frustration.

SO…we get jealous…but disguise that jealousy in conversations with other leaders as “concern.”  (Which…if we were REALLY concerned with another person and/or ministry…wouldn’t we just talk to them rather than talk about them?)

Being jealous is an extreme danger because it is a sin rooted in a heart that refuses to give God thanks for all He has done…and instead focuses on what He is doing for others…and begins to covet.  (Remember Saul became outraged when he was credited with thousands and David his tens of thousands…and that jealousy was the beginning of the end for him!)

I believe the last thing that God wants pastors to do is sit around the locker room and compare…unfortunately…come guys just can’t seem to snap out of that scenario.  Their “chenis envy” (as my friend Los says) gets the best of them…and instead of focusing on reaching the world for Christ they begin interrogation tactics on ANY ministry that is seeing success in order that they can justify why they are so much better than the other guy!

How do we combat jealousy?  Simple…two things…

#1 – Celebrate the success of others – seriously, when another church succeeds–CELEBRATE!  The last thing the body of Christ needs is churches and leaders taking shots at one another and disguising it as “protecting the body” when it is really that leaders damaged ego because he perceives that the “glory may be fading!”

#2 – Don’t let yourself switch to negative mode automatically – One of the things that really drives me up the wall is when a church begins to experience some success and you begin a conversation about that particular church with another leader–who automatically begins to say things like…

  • “Yeah…well, I know the real story going on there.”
  • “I’m sure those salvation’s/baptisms aren’t real.”
  • “All they do is steal ideas from other churches.”

I could go on…but you get the point.

I’ve got to be honest…there are people in the leadership world that I can’t have a conversation with anymore because they are always so negative when it comes to the success of other ministries and leaders.  Folks…THAT is the result of a lethal combonation of insecurity AND pride!

Let me say it again…when someone else succeeds…CELEBRATE; after all, we play for the same COACH, we’re on the same team!

Because…if we don’t learn to celebrate success we may cease to see it because God knows our motives are not about “HE” or “we” but rather all about “me!”

One more thing…leaders…pride is DANGEROUS…and MUST be CONSTANTLY fought against by us BEGGING JESUS to give us a humble heart AND NEVER FORGETTING WHERE HE FOUND US AND HOW FAR HE HAS BROUGHT US!!!  (I Corinthians 6:9-11 is a great reminder for me personally.)  ONLY JESUS knows whether or not we have a heart that is both humble and fully His.

Hey NewSpring…We Need Your Help! October 12, 2009

Normally I take this particular blog post on Monday’s to take a minute to encourage pastors and church leaders…but today there is something important I need to address…

On September 21st a major flood hit the Atlanta area…especially the western side.

Most of the homes in this area are inhabited by lower middle class working families and, unfortunatly, around 95% of the houses that were impacted were not is a designated flood plain AND had NO flood insurance.

AND…THEY NEED OUR HELP!

We are going to be partnering with Shaun King at Courageous Church and HopeATL.com who have been leading volunteer crews of 10 to 12 people to perform as much demolition as possible.

At the present time, homes are still being gutted of personal items, furniture, appliances, flooring, sub-flooring, electrical wiring, heating & air, and drywall.  These demolition projects do not have to be performed by skilled construction crews, so any able-bodied person can help with the demolition effort.  Teams will need to be equipped with hand tools such as hammers, crow-bars, wheelbarrows, gloves and masks, and power tools such as circular saws, recriprocating saws, and power generators.  We will bus our teams from the Anderson Campus at 7 am this Saturday, October 17th and be back in Anderson by 8:00 pm.

Timing is everything because the City of Atlanta is giving the area 7 more days (till this Saturday Oct. 17th) to demo the ruined materials out of the homes.  After the 17th the City will pick up their dumpsters and will not remove any other flood damaged waste.  After the city hauls away the dumpsters, homeowners will have to dispose of anything left themselves.

SO…we’re looking for volunteers…LOTS of them…from WHATEVER campus you may attend…to JUMP IN and help us out with this project.  We’ve been asked to help…and it is my prayer that we will step up in a HUGE WAY so that a HUGE difference can be made!

Can you help?  If so…then email us at hello@newspring.cc with your contact phone number and email address ASAP and we will be in touch.

Seriously NewSpring…lets do all we can to reach out a hand to our neighbors in the ATL…it will take a day of our time and maybe a good bit of sweat and hard work…but doing this IS LIVING the GOSPEL out in front of people…and I am quite sure lives will be changed.

Sunday Night Reflections October 11, 2009

WHAT an amazing day…a few thoughts before heading to bed!

  • The Daraja children’s choir leading us in worship will be an experience that I am quite sure I will never forget…WOW!
  • (HERE is information on future Kenya trips…including how to sign up and such…)
  • The 11:15 service today was one of the most INCREDIBLE services we’ve ever had at NewSpring Church.
  • Columbia campus is continuing to grow…and five people received Christ there today!  (Hearing that NEVER gets old!)
  • We literally covered the entire book of Revelation in one service…the KEY to understanding the book is found in the first five words of Revelation 1:1!!!
  • We will never discover WHAT God wants until we discover WHO HE IS…which is made OBVIOUS in the person and work of Jesus Christ.
  • Our eternal significance is NOT tied into our success but rather our Savior!
  • It is a dangerous thing to say God is silent when the Bible says that His Word is living and active!  (Hebrews 4:12)
  • One day EVERYTHING we have of value will be placed at the feet of Jesus…but…if we’re truly following Him that won’t be anything new because we are already doing it.
  • I loved coaching our church today on how to respond to critics…we DON’T fight with them (see Nehemiah 6:1-4)…as Rick Warren says…we OUTLOVE them, OUTLIVE them and OUTFRUIT them.
  • Our obsession doesn’t need to be what “they” say…but rather what HE says…and HE says to preach the GOSPEL!!!
  • Talking about racism is always tense…and fun!  AND…it’s true…white people can’t clap!!!
  • God’s wrath will destroy every ounce of poverty, injustice, abuse and hatred that exist in the world…which makes me believe it is NOT a bad thing.
  • Ending the service with “You Hold Me Now” was a POWERFUL worship moment that I don’t think we’ll ever forget.
  • We have two more weeks to go in the series…one of which we will cover the question, “What happens to you when you die?”
  • Then…November 1st we begin a brand new series entitled, “Don’t get married until…”  It is specifically targetting singles (although EVERY married couple needs to be there for “review!”)
  • I honestly believe it is going to be the most direct and straighforward teaching I’ve ever done on being single and preparing to get married.
  • REALLY excited about November 22 when Lucretia will be joining me on stage to answer question from the congregation via text messaging and twitter.
  • The early bird for UNLEASH ends October 31…it’s $39…if you are a church leader then you really need to get on this.  I found out the other day that our sing ups are 62% ahead of where they were this time last year…it’s filling up FAST!!!  AND…seats are limited!
  • REALLY looking forward to hosting the guys from our coaching network and the staff that each of them serve with this Thursday…it’s going to be an amazing day!
  • REALLY excited about our 10th anniversary service in the BILO Center on January 24th.
  • REALLY excited about all that God is doing in our church…so thankful for all that has happened…and just think, the BEST IS YET TO COME!
