Making A Difference! September 16, 2009

God has called our church to partner with the 410 Bridge in reaching the people of Segera in Kenya…

We’ve sent two teams so far…and our last team was the largest medical mission team that 410 has ever sent to the region…

AND LIVES WERE CHANGED!!!

Take a second or two to watch this video…I can’t stop crying…and can’t wait to go back!

Five Ways To Fight Discouragement–Part One September 16, 2009

All of us deal with it…but especially church leaders.

Those days when we just can’t seem to hit on all cylinders…when we wonder if what we do is making a difference…when we wished we had a job where we merely stacked rocks all day long and could clock out at 5:00 and go home.

BUT…we don’t…we do what we do because we’re called.  So…when times of discouragement come–how do we deal with them?

I noticed the other day when reading I Samuel 30:1-6 that the Bible says, after an INCREDIBLY discouraging event in his life, that David found strength in the Lord his God…that he encouraged himself…how do we do that?

#1 – STOP Comparing Yourself To Other People/Churches/Ministries.

When we compare we ALWAYS lose because there is ALWAYS someone who does it better, has a larger congregation and/or seems to always have the great ideas.

Too many leaders spend way too much time in a pit of discouragement because they feel as if they are not as good as “so and so!”

God didn’t ask us to be in a state of comparison…because comparison OFTEN leads to compromise because we want what others have…and so we will go against God’s vision for our lives/the church to get what we perceive needs to be gotten!

BUT..as leaders, when we stand before Jesus and are held accountable one day (Hebrews 13:17) we will not answer for what other churches/ministries did and did not do…but rather what we did with the vision and gifting that He blessed us with.

#2 – Surround Yourself With Encouraging People

I personally cannot imagine not working in an environment where there isn’t an abundance of encouragement.

One of the reasons that some church leaders are always discouraged is because they are surrounded by people who make them want to drive their car off of a cliff.  These people would be…

  • The person who feels like it is their gifting to point out every problem when an idea is discussed.
  • The person who is always having a bad day…and feels like you should know about it.
  • The person who feels like it is the leaders job to always pump them up and get them excited.
  • The person who supports you publicly but bashes you privately.
  • The person who is always taking shots at you and then, when confronted, claims they were only joking.
  • The person who always “that” look on their face every time they see you.  (You know, the one that says, “I smell a fart…it’s gross…and I just can’t deal with it!”)
  • The person who has the gift of “stare and glare” and often use it on you when you are casting vision for your ministry!

I could go on…(and I am sure you could to)…but the point is probably well taken…discouraging people are a drain!!!

(Please understand…I fully acknowledge that people have bad days.  BUT…when someone has had a bad day every single day for over a week or two…that person ISN’T the person ANYONE wants to be around!)

It is essential for a leader to have an atmosphere of encouragement because it is in this atmosphere that leadership can thrive…not just survive!

My challenge…take a look at the people around you and ask…

  • Do they bring me joy or drain the heck out of me?
  • Would I hang out with these people if we didn’t work together?

Like I said…I believe I work in one of the most encouraging environments on the planet!!!

It’s not just how hard you work that will make a difference…but WHO you work with is essential as well.

Five Reasons You Should Be Here On Sunday! September 15, 2009

People often ask, “why should I come to church this weekend?”  Here’s five reasons why…

#1 – We are going to talk about sex…and it will be the most intense, direct and honest message I’ve ever preached on that subject.

#2 – Hearing AND applying what will be taught on Sunday COULD save your marriage…or your future marriage…from the disaster that affairs bring.

#3 – Because you may struggle with having a past sexual history…and you need to know that if you have received Christ then God has forgiven you and wants you to move on!

#4 – Because there MAY be an attack on your marriage that you are unaware of that will get exposed on Sunday.

#5 – Because I will be doing interpretive dance dressed in a pink tutu!

OK…every single one of these are true except the last one!!!

Seriously, can’t wait for this Sunday as we conclude the “Five Lies of the Devil” series by talking about the lie, “It’s Just Sex!”

AND…the next week we begin, “How To Survive The End of the World,” our very first series ever on the End Times!!!  YES!!!

18 Signs That A Staff Has Lost Its Mind September 15, 2009

Last week this post about 16 signs that a leader has lost his mind got a lot of attention…so this week I wanted to blog about the other side of this and take a look at how you can tell a staff (or staff members) has lost its mind.

#1 – They begin to use the church to support their vision and agenda rather than doing all they can for the church to support the vision and agenda of Jesus.

#2 – They view themselves as “experts” and are always seeking to be consulted rather than diving into the thousands of opportunities that are available for growth and maturity.

#3 – They begin to view “good enough” as something that God is pleased with.

#4 – They force change in the organization out of boredom rather than from a connection to Jesus.

#5 – They begin to do ministry to impress other churches and ministry leaders rather than to serve the people that are in their immediate community.

#6 – They are willing to spend other people’s tithe money…but are unwilling to tithe to the church themselves!

#7 – They get to the point where they can do their job without depending upon the Holy Spirit!  (This is one of the most dangerous places to be in the church…if you can do what you do without HIS leadership…repent!)

#8 – They refuse to deal with obvious problems that God brings to their attention for fear that it may mess up the comfortable routine they have established.

#9 – They think that God owes them something for all of the hard work they have done.

#10 – They view gossiping about other people on staff as “venting” or “just sharing their feelings.”

#11 – They believe that serving in the ministry will cover over the character issue that God is constantly bringing to their mind and won’t let go of!

#12 – They believe they are entitled to special treatment because of the way they are “gifted.”

#13 – They don’t understand II Corinthians 4:1…that it is because of HIS mercy and not our ability that we are even in ministry!!!

#14 – They view themselves as a part of a particular department more than being a part of the church!

#15 – They lose sight of the fact that they do not start a move of God–they steward it.

#16 – They think they have the corner of the market on Jesus…and that everyone who isn’t doing it just like them are wrong!

#17 – They are always identifying problems but never bringing any solutions.

#18 – They believe they are irreplaceable and that the ministry could not go on without them!

I’ve got to say this…because someone will ask OR assume…

I love my staff!!!  I have a dream team!  I would not trade one single person on our staff for ANY person at another church!!!

So…this was not a blog post to them!  :-)

BUT…it was a blog post based on mistakes that I have made and our staff has made over the past 10 years.

Felt like I needed to say that!

Why I Believe The Churches BEST DAYS Are Ahead Of Us! September 14, 2009

If you are a pastor/church leader…I hope you will give me a couple of minutes of your time…because…I really feel the Lord pressing in on me to SHOUT OUT to every church leader than I have been given the privilege to speak into that…

THE CHURCHES BEST DAYS ARE YET TO COME!

I’ve never seen in my 38 years of life on this big ball of dirt called earth what is happening in the church right now.

And it FIRES ME UP!

  • Churches are being planted at a faster rate than ever before…by people who have a fire for Jesus and HIS Kingdom…and not the advance of a denomination!
  • Pastors are preaching the GOSPEL…and not a social agenda with a few Bible verses sprinkeled in for good luck.
  • People are being called to commit their lives to Christ instead of being told that they are ok as long as they leave a tip in the offering plate.
  • People are actually reading their Bible’s and discovering that they can have an active & vibrant relationship with Jesus rather than trying to use some type of human mediator.
  • People are understanding that a church is not effective when the pastor ministers to the people…but rather when the body ministers to the body, thus embracing the fact that God has gifted, equipped and empowered them to serve Him by serving others through His church.
  • People are becoming less about consumption and more about contribution.
  • Leaders are learning from each other–despite minor theological and denominational differences.
  • People like Craig Groeschel and the guys at LifeChurch have led the way in demonstrating a culture of generosity among the Big “C” church…and HIS Kingdom is being well served because of that.
  • Technology is being leveraged for more than viewing porn!  The church has actually discovered that it is a tool for reaching the world with the GOSPEL of Jesus Christ.

I could go on and on…but the fact is that I believe that God is doing something HUGE right now…

AND YOU ARE A PART OF IT!!!

It doesn’t matter if you had 70 in your church yesterday or 7,000…it was CHURCH…HIS CHURCH…and He loves churches of 50 just as much as churches of 50,000!

If one person received Christ in your church yesterday…the angels rejoiced just as much over that person than they did the church where hundreds did the same thing.

God has a plan for your church…it’s huge…it’s breathtaking…it’s massive…and when it is fully played out the communities in which our churches are planted will be IMPACTED and INFLUENCED in a way the world has never seen.

Your best days are ahead of you…not behind you!

Keep your eyes on JESUS…listen to Him and do what He says…and let’s keep making sure that HELL is LESS POPULATED because our churches refused to allow people to go there!!!

Sunday Night Reflections September 13, 2009

To say that I am in awe of what Jesus did today at NewSpring Church would be an understatement.  I am sitting here on my couch trying to wrap my mind around all that took place…wow…here are some thoughts…

  • We saw 276 people stand up today and pray to receive Christ…THAT NEVER GETS OLD!
  • We challenged people to be baptized, explained it and then told people we were baptizing right after the service.
  • We had towels, shorts, T-shirts, underwear and sports bras!!!  Seriously–we took away everyone’s excuse…AND…
  • WE SAW 906 PEOPLE GO PUBLIC FOR JESUS TODAY…that is the largest baptism in the history of our church…in the nearly 10 years of being a part of NewSpring I’ve NEVER seen a day like today–EVER!
  • A dude watched our service on the web this evening, knew he needed to be baptized…so he got in his car, drove 30 minutes to NewSpring and was baptized!  That’s AWESOME!
  • We also set another attendance record today…had the most people we’ve EVER had attend a NewSpring service.
  • Our Columbia campus had a vision event this morning and over 130 people were there…we launch that campus two weeks from today…can’t wait!
  • I LITERALLY CAN’T BELIEVE WHAT JESUS IS DOING IN OUR CHURCH RIGHT NOW…and NO ONE is more amazed than me, I can’t believe HE ALLOWS ME to be a part of this!
  • Today we talked about recognition and submission…if we fail to recognize who Jesus is we will never submit to His Lordship!
  • The reason so many Christians never experience a significant breakthrough in their lives is because we refuse to obey God in the small things.
  • How can He trust us with what is next if we aren’t being faithful with what He’s showing us now?
  • The question we need to answer is, “Did I pray a prayer to get me out of hell…or did I confess Jesus Christ as Lord and tell Him that I would submit to His leadership and follow Him?”
  • When we see who Jesus is we won’t have a problem doing what He says.
  • Is there any area of your life in which you are unwilling to submit to Jesus?  If so…He’s not going to give up and move on to something else…the best thing to do when He’s dealing with you is allow yourself to be dealt with!
  • The first step He commands new believers to take is baptism (Matthew 28:18-20)  And so…like I said…we challenged people to take that step!
  • Pastors/church leaders…the people you serve will rise to the level in which you challenge them…if you challenge them to do nothing then you can’t get angry with them because they are doing nothing!!!
  • Next week we are completing this series by talking about the lie, “It’s Just Sex!”
  • AND then the next week we begin our series on the End Times!  (On Sunday, October 11 I am going preach through the entire book of Revelation in one message!!!)
  • I believe Jesus is going to save LOTS of people in this series…seriously…I can’t say this enough, if you KNOW SOMEONE who does not know Christ then GET THEM TO CHURCH during this series!!!  The Gospel will be shared EVERY WEEK!
  • We are seeing Ephesians 3:20 continually come to life before our eyes!
  • On a personal note…I would REALLY appreciate your prayers for Lucretia, my amazing wife.  She’s really sick with a pretty intense head cold…she didn’t sleep well last night, which means I didn’t either!  :-)
  • BUT…she got some Nyqol for tonight!!!  :-)

NewSpringers…let me close out by saying it is an honor to serve as your pastor.  What God is doing among us is NOT NORMAL!  I believe we are seeing THE CHURCH become more and more about what God wants it to become.  We are BY NO MEANS perfect…but more and more I believe we are seeing Acts 2:42-47 begin to take place!

I love what I do…can’t believe that Jesus lets me do it…and am already looking forward to next Sunday!!!
