Four Reasons People Attack – Part Three April 16, 2009

Reason #3 – Arrogance

Some people have a desire to be right…and that desire is so strong that they will be allow pride disguised as “protecting Jesus and his church” to manifest in an attack mode.

The problem with many ministries in the world is that the ministry leaders believe that they have discovered the only way to do something.  However, it is so clear from both the Scriptures and the world we live in that there is not just one way to do church.

Jesus in his scriptures is very clear about what our goals should be (evangelism, discipleship, etc.); however he leaves many of the “how’s” to the leadership to the church (under the direction of HIS Holy Spirit!)  In the book of Revelation chapter 2 and chapter 3 he addressed seven different churches in seven different ways, completely acknowledging the cultural and geographical differences…and yet at the same time ends each message with the GOSPEL…which should be our focus.

One of the things that I always teach here at NewSpring Church is that we do not have the corner on the market when it comes to a movement of God.  We aren’t doing church “the right way.”  We aren’t doing church a better way.  We are doing church the way God called us to do it…and if another church is doing what God has called them to do and people are being reached, lives are being changed, sin is being repented of, the excluded are being included, teenagers are discovering their potential in Christ, marriages are being restored and children are learning about Jesus and so on…who in the world would want to criticize that?  (Answer – satan…just in case you were curious!)

Leading On Empty April 15, 2009

A few years ago I had the privilege of meeting Pastor Wayne Cordeiro at a Leadership Network meeting in Dallas…and the Lord used him that day to both challenge and encourage me in incredible ways.

Recently, through a recommendation by Bob, I picked up his book, “Leading on Empty,”…and COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN!

If you are a senior pastor…seriously…I can’t say this strong enough–GET THIS BOOK ASAP…GET AWAY BY YOURSELF…AND READ IT! Pastor Wayne does an outstanding job of talking about leadership burnout from the senior pastors’ perspective…and how it can be prevented.

(Reading the book made such an impact on me personally I bought a copy for everyone on our SMT…and also for the guys who were in my last coaching network.  BTW…if you were in my last coaching network and haven’t gotten your copy–get in touch with Lindsay and she will take care of you.)

Pastors–here’s the deal…MOST people do not understand us!  In fact, I’ve always said it takes a pastor to understand a pastor.  Well, Wayne is a pastor’s pastor.  Here are a few highlights from the book…

  • “We don’t forget that we are Christians.  We forget that we are human, and that one oversight alone can debilitate the potential of our future.”
  • “Pastors are expected to lead even when the desire or inclination to do so is severely challenged.  I knew others loved me, but living up to the expectations systemically ingrained into the fabric of who I was became the person I could not escape.”
  • “Gradually my creativity began to flag, and I found it easier to imitate rather than innovate.  I was backing away from the very things that used to challenge and invigorate me.”
  • “Zeal and good intentions can fuel us in the beginning, but they won’t last over the long haul…high self expectations can eventually eat full time shepherds alive.”
  • “I was fixing everybody’s problems except my own, and I needed time to replenish my spirit.”
  • “I wonder how much more effective our churches would be if we made the pastor’s spiritual health–not the pastor’s efficiency–our number one priority.”  Quote from Philip Yancy in the book
  • “In a sense, a pastor never punches out.  Of course some may, but for those who see their profession as a calling, they simply cannot.”
  • “Many times we won’t make major course corrections until the pain of staying the same becomes greater than the pain of making the change.”
  • “While everyone in our great church loves the Cordeiro family, I have come to realize that nobody is fighting for my family.  That’s my job.”
  • “Yesterday’s great ideas get tired today, and churches, even great ones, can get tired.  Without wise and hungry leaders, a church’s endeavors will flatline.”

I could go on and on…TRUST ME…GET THIS BOOK!!!

Four Reasons People Attack – Part Two April 15, 2009

Reason Number Two – Misunderstanding.

I have been so guilty of this in my past.  There were times when someone would share with me a 30 second sermon clip or something that someone had told someone that had told someone, that heard it from their cousin  who was in a church service where “it” happened…and I will make a snap judgment based on falsehood and stupidity rather than truth.

One of the problems that exist in church world today is when a person hears a fraction of a story and believes they possess the truth in its entirety, people will always criticize what they do not understand.

So if you are a ministry leader you have got to understand you will be misquoted, you will be taken out of context, you will be misrepresented, you will be misunderstood, thus causing those who do not like you anyway to have more fuel for the purpose of attacking you and tearing you down!

By the way, you waste your time trying to explain yourself.  In reading through the Gospels, Jesus never wasted time trying to explain himself who weren’t going to like him anyway.  The ministry you have over the long haul with do all of the explaining that needs to take place!  Keep your eyes on Jesus!

Four Reasons People Attack – Part One April 14, 2009

One of things that I was not prepared for when I first became a pastor and our church started experiencing growth was the number of people that would publicly come out and criticize the ministry that I believed that God had called me and our church to do.

I’ve been very honest and transparent on this blog about critics, how to deal with critics, and such, however one of the things I have never dealt with here is why do people attack people.  Specifically why do people who claim the name of Jesus feel it necessary to attack others who claim the name of Jesus?  I believe there are four reasons.

Reason number one – Hurting people hurt people.

One of the things that I have personally discovered in having a few conversations with people who felt it necessary to criticize and attack me individually is that many times they were dealing with some sort of personal hurt from their past that they felt necessary to take out on someone who reminded of them of the person that actually hurt them.

If you are in ministry and someone in your church has been abused by a ministry leader at some point in their past and they did not deal with it, they will many times unintentionally begin to take out their anger, pain, and frustration on you.

If we do not deal with the pain of our past it will dominate our future.

Hurting people hurt people and its one of the things and its one of the things we must consider when we know of someone in our church that is continually in attack mode.

When we begin to see this type of person through this lense it allows us to have compassion on them and help them through it…because if someone doesn’t help them they will continue to tear people apart…all “in the name of Jesus.”

Coaching Network Update… April 13, 2009

Last week I posted about cranking up a second round of a coaching network that is going to begin this fall (here is the post in case you missed it)..and I have been absolutely overwhelmed by the response.

We will be taking applications throughout the month of April – and you can get an application by emailing my assistant, Lindsay Taguba.  (Her email address is lindsay.taguba@newspring.cc).

In May I will set up a team to help me pray through and sort out the applications…and in August we will get things ROLLING.

If you have any questions…then contact Lindsay, she will be more than happy to assist you.

BTW…before you email Lindsay…you really need to read the original post I linked above…it has more details in regards to why I am doing the network, how much it cost and some of the issues we will be covering.

Can’t wait!!!

Sunday Night Reflections April 12, 2009

So…going to try to blog something…my mind is STILL spinning…

  • I honestly feel that this weekends services were the most amazing services we’ve ever had since NewSpring Church was started in the fall of 1999.
  • We saw between 325 and 350 people receive Jesus this weekend!  AND…
  • The invitation was “old school,” people were challenged to leave their seats, walk forward and pray out loud!  (BTW…THAT STILL HAPPENS!)
  • THAT is the most people that have ever responded to the Gospel in a weekend service.
  • Our total church attendance was over 15,000 for the first time in the history of our church!
  • Greenville campus (less than a year old) went over 3,000 for the first time today!
  • Florence campus had over 450 people today…they are less than 6 months old and average around 300.
  • Our web campus had over 800 view services online!
  • AND…today…we preached THE GOSPEL!!!  What Jesus said and what Jesus did sets Him apart!!!
  • I was FIRED up in the invitation time…I am seriously tired of the church screwing around with the Gospel and pretending that hell isn’t real!
  • Religion is all about what we do to get to God…Christianity is all about what God did to get to us!
  • We began the service with “Highway to Hell,” – it was unbelievable!
  • Yes, I hope Danny Gokey wins American Idol!
  • Folks…what happened today at our church IS NOT NORMAL…it wasn’t a “nice service”…it was a move of God!  I’ve honestly never been a part of something like what happened today…and it’s only the beginning.
  • THAT is one of the problems with church today…we’ve became “normal” when the call of Christ on our lives is to change the world–”normal” people can’t do that!
  • We will continue this series on Sunday…expecting/praying for God to do amazing things AGAIN!

AND…to NewSpringers…a personal note…

Weekends like this make it all worth it.  All of the criticism…all of the “go to hell” looks my family and I get when we are out and about…all of the emails and bloggers that don’t like what we do…it’s ALL worth it!!!

Reality is this…satan got kicked in the nuts this weekend!  Hell is going to be less crowded!  People crossed over from death to life.  The way a community is changed is by the church preaching AND living the Gospel…and I believe we are going to continue to see Jesus do the unexplainable and undeniable…and we, His church, will continue to become unstoppable!

He’s alive–we win…now all we need to do is continually run up the score!!!

I LOVE you guys…I LOVE our church…I LOVE serving here…there is NOTHING ELSE on the planet I would rather do!  I’m bought in!!!

Can’t wait to see what happens next!
