Four Wishes I Have For Church Leaders – Part Three April 30, 2009
#3 – That We Will Be Filled With Passion!
Life is too short to screw around and play games!
The church doesn’t need any more leaders who are apathetic and unaware of who JESUS is and what HE wants to do with HIS church…but rather we need leaders who are consumed with passion, who have a fire inside of them that cannot be contained (Jeremiah 20:9)…and will do whatever they can to reach whoever they can and literally watch Jesus change their community one life at a time!
Our motivation for EVERYTHING we do should be passion…unfortunately for some church leaders passion isn’t their motivation…a paycheck is…and because of that their vision is “always for sale!”
One of the reasons I believe the church in America lacks passion overall is because her leaders lack passion. It seems that our main obsession has become to maintain the status quo and keep the sheep happy rather than to listen to the voice of Jesus and do what He says!
Passion is something we must pray for…and then allow it to consume our lives.
- A passionate leader keeps on trying when others have given up.
- A passionate leader will stand and fight for what is right when others run.
- A passionate leader WILL NOT STOP asking God to do the unexplainable and the undeniable so that the church will become unstoppable.
- A passionate leader will face his biggest fears because he knows that God is Sovereign.
- A passionate leader will not offer up excuses as to why what God has spoken to him cannot be done
- A passionate leader will believe in the team around him and learn to pull from their passion when his seems to be fading.
- A passionate leader will sacrifice—period!
- A passionate leader will operate “in the now” but will always be moving towards what is next.
We don’t need any more leaders who are locked up in the prison of predictability. We need leaders in the church who are consumed with passion. When what REALLY matters to God TRULY matters to us…the world will NOT be able to resist all He wants to do through His church.
Four Wishes I Have For Church Leaders – Part Two April 29, 2009
#2 – That We Will Be Faithful.
Every time I read II Timothy 4:6-8 I cry as I think about the Apostle Paul sitting and waiting to die…and KNOWING that he finished well.
I WANT THAT for me and for every church leader as well!!!
- I don’t want to see another leader flame out and give up on Jesus and His church!
- I don’t want to see another leader leave the ministry because he could not remain faithful to his wife.
- I don’t want to see another leader give up on the vision GOD has placed inside of him because people who don’t know Jesus keep telling him, “that can’t be done!”
- I don’t want to see another leader who is afraid to preach the Gospel and teach hard truths because he knows if he does that people will get offended and leave the church.
- I don’t want to see another leader who allows critics to shape his ministry…and wastes his time responding to them rather than fulfilling his calling.
- I don’t want to see another leader who feels like he has to do it all…thus sacrificing his family on the alter of ministry.
- I don’t want to see another leader burn out.
- I don’t want to see another leader give up!!!
I once heard a statistic (can’t remember exactly where) that 90-95% of the people entering ministry will not make it in ministry…and it BROKE MY HEART!
Philippians 1:6 has been my personal rallying cry so many times…if He called me He will sustain me no matter what I go through.
One of my constant prayers for myself and the team of staff that I serve with is that we will be faithful to Jesus…that we will serve His church…that we will feel fulfilled…and that our eyes will ALWAYS be on Him.
(I find personally that the times I want to quit/walk away are the times I make it all about me and not about Jesus!)
Church leader—we ALL wrestle with feelings of inadequacy, insecurity, frustration, anger and doubt…but once again…Philippians 1:6…read it, memorize it and live it!!!
Jesus was faithful to God and HIS calling…He MUST be our example! No one said it would be EASY…but I can’t imagine there is no greater reward than standing in front of Him one day and hearing, “well done.”
Coaching Network Update April 28, 2009
I’ve mentioned it a few times on this blog…but I wanted to throw out one more time that I am doing a coaching network this fall. (Here is my original post about it…and like I said in the post…if you want to apply then please email Lindsay.Taguba@newspring.cc to request an application.)
Before requesting an application let me remind you of several things…
- There is a time commitment…it will be a total of four sessions…the dates have already been set (and are listed on the application.)
- There is a financial commitment. It costs $1,500 and the payment is due no later than June 30th.
- There is an attitude commitment. We are seeking people with people who really want to do what is right instead of complaining about all that is wrong.
- There is a hunger commitment. Everyone should be HUNGRY to learn from everyone in this network.
Please read…THE DEADLINE FOR RECEIVING APPLICATIONS IS 5:00 EST on WEDNESDAY, MAY 6th!!!
AND…FYI…I am not making the final decision on who and who does not get accepted. I am assembling a team of around four or five people that are going to help me read through, pray over and select whom we feel the Lord wants to be involved in this round of coaching.
I’ve been overwhelmed at the number of application requests…it seriously has blown my mind. And I can’t wait for this thing to get cranked up!!!
BUT…let me remind you one more time…THE DEADLINE FOR RECEIVING APPLICATIONS IS 5:00 EST on WEDNESDAY, MAY 6th!!!
Four Wishes I Have For Church Leaders April 28, 2009
#1 – That Everyone Of Us Will Experience Success In Our Ministry!
I honestly believe that if someone has a calling of God on their lives it is because HE wants them to accomplish something significant for His Kingdom…and whatever that calling is will be the key to our success.
The Word “success” is a dangerous one because, as church leaders, we are so easily swayed to allow other things to define our success (such as comparison with others and conditional obedience to Jesus), thus neglecting the specific call of God on our lives.
The Lord told Joshua in Joshua 1:8 to not let the book of the Law depart from Him…to think about it, be consumed with it…and that doing so would lead to being prosperous and successful.
There is SO much wisdom and encouragement in that verse for us as church leaders (HECK…as human beings!!!) True success is directly tied to God’s Word being in us and working through us.
Whenever I am feeling pressure from what I call unrealistic expectations of success I always try to get a word from THE WORD…to go back to my calling and focus my eyes on who Jesus is and what HE wants me to do.
Success is not determined by our service to ourselves…but rather in our submission to the Savior! He saved us…He called us…He has a plan for us…and it is so much larger than we could ever imagine.
I pray that ALL of us listen to God and do what He says…because when we do that the church will continue to become the unstoppable force He desires us to be!!!
AND…I honestly think the church as a whole would see WAY more success in our ministries if we began COMPLETING one another instead of COMPETING with one another!
What is your specific calling? Begin with this question – “What would you be willing to attempt for God if you knew you could not fail?” Seriously…that question changed my life. How about it?
Eleven Things I Want To Do… April 27, 2009
Everyone has a wish list (or at least SHOULD have one!) Here are 10 things I want to do…some ministry, some personal…all serious!
#1 – I Want NewSpring Church To Reach Over 100,000 People For Jesus Christ!
If the early church can do what they did in Acts 2:41 with ABSOLUTELY none of the technology we have today…then what does the Lord expect of us? I believe we will see this…am begging God for it…and will not back down from doing all that I can to see that this happens.
#2 – I Want To Have At Least 25 NewSpring Campuses In The Next 10 Years.
I don’t know how in the heck we are going to do this…but I know that multi site works and that our church is called to do this.
#3 – I Want To Begin A Church Planting Network.
Once again, I don’t know how…I just know that I have a heart for church planters! I want to help as much as I possibly can…and I know that our church must be involved in both church planting and multi site.
#4 – I Want To See At Least 3,000 People Be Baptized In One Day!!!
If it happened in Acts…it can happen again. He’s the same God!!!
#5 – I Want To Go Back To Hillsong Church!
Going there was amazing for me…Jesus used it to stir my heart in a major way…and I hope to get back there someday!
#6 – I Want To Have A Meal With TD Jakes!
Yep, I said it several weeks ago…I will say it again. He is one of the leaders I really admire…but have never had a chance to meet in person!
#7 – I Want Rick Warren To Come To Anderson, SC!
OK…I know Rick probably doesn’t even know where Anderson is…but I would LOVE to have him come here…spend a day with him and have him talk to the staff…hey, dream big, right?
#8 – I Would Love To Go To Rome!
It seems like Rome has came up several times in conversations recently…and everyone who has gone says it is awesome!
#9 – I Would Love To Own A Jeep Rubicon!
Maybe it’s the weather…but I can’t help but think that driving a jeep would be SOOOOO relaxing.
#10 – I Would Love To Buy 5-10 Acres Of Land…Build A House Right In The Middle Of It…And COMPLETELY Enjoy Living In The Country!
#11 – I Would Love To Have Biceps Like Craig Groeschel!
If you were at Catalyst West Coast then you know EXACTLY what I am talking about. When he rolled up his shirt sleeve and showed off his bicep I said, “dang” out loud! He’s ripped!!!
Sunday Night Reflections April 26, 2009
A few thoughts before heading to bed…
- Today we saw around 175 people pray to receive Christ at our campuses! (That is over 600 in the past three weeks…thank YOU JESUS!!!)
- Today we dealt with what Jesus said in Matthew 7:21-23.
- Jesus preached the Gospel to a religious crowd…one of the main problems in churches today is people show up every week who know all about Jesus…but have never confessed Him as Lord and received Him into their lives!
- God stretched the heck out of me at Catalyst West Coast…AND confirmed a few things in me that I’ve been feeling for quite some time…saying that…
- I BELIEVE we are getting ready to launch some incredible things over the next six months…and in doing so we are going to see Ephesians 3:20 type stuff happen right in front of our eyes!
- Today wasn’t comfortable…and as I said, “One of the biggest mistakes anyone could ever make about me is to think I actually give a crap about someone’s level of comfortability!”
- The church has gotten obsessed with comfortability…and the Gospel has been diluted in the process!!!
- Yes, I really did get to meet Jeff Foxworthy last year…and no…he doesn’t have any idea who I am!
- Yes, I really did have a pair of Superman underoos!!!
- I saw on twitter today where a lady drove a group of teenage girls two hours just to attend a NewSpring service! WOW…that blows my mind!!!
- Of all of the things that amaze me about Jesus…the fact that He is allowing me to be a part of this absolutely blows my mind!
- PRAYING that I actually sleep tonight…I NEED IT BAD!!!
- I’m hungry…like REALLY hungry…feel like I need to eat something but don’t want to right before I go to bed!!!
- I am LOVING the NBA playoffs…the guys actually play and it is exciting to watch.
- The Lord has brought some MAJOR opportunities my way lately…and over the next two months I am going to have the opportunity to meet with/be mentored by some amazing men of God!
- (By the way…a leader is a learner…and is always willing to do whatever it takes to learn all that he can! When you stop learning…you stop leading!)
- Read Romans 12:8 this morning…that verse always fires me up!
That’s it…time for bed…good night!
Leadership Thoughts From Acts – Part Five April 24, 2009
#5 – God Moves Through Preaching And Teaching That Honors Him – Acts 2:14-41
Confession…I think so many times I’ve made preaching WAY too complicated.
Peter kept it pretty simple…three things I see that he did that we all can do…
A. He Preached The Word Of God – Acts 2:16-21, Acts 2:25-28, Acts 2:38
People need to be taught the Bible!!! The first recorded sermon in the church is LOADED with Scripture…and Peter made no apologies for it.
(BTW–Peter most likely didn’t have a copy of the Scriptures in front of him…this was from memory, which is a challenge to me as a speaker and leader than I need to constantly be IN HIS WORD…getting to know HIM through it! His Word IS His will…and the more I know it the better I can communicate it.)
One of the disturbing trends I am seeing among some churches today is that the Bible is not preached…heck, sometimes it is even spoken againsts and questioned. (BTW…the questioning of God’s Word in Genesis 3 didn’t work out to well!!!)
I’ve never met a person who screwed up their lives by living according to the Word of God…but I’ve met plenty who have rebelled against it and suffered the consequences.
B. He Was Controlled By The Spirit Of God – Acts 2:1-5
The Bible clearly says that Peter was filled with the Holy Spirit…and when that happened he preached a HARD message; in fact, he said some things that some people probably didn’t like and were upset over. (See Acts 2:22-23 and Acts 2:36…whenever you tell a crowd they are a bunch of murderers…I am POSITIVE that someone got upset and complained!)
Some people think that when a person is Spirit filled they are always nice, popular and well liked…this passage proves quite the opposite!
Oh yeah…one more point on this…He was filled with the Spirit of God…which led Him to the Word of God! God’s Word and God’s Spirit work together, not seperately. When we listen to His Spirit…we will be led to His Word…and…
C. He Talked About The Son Of God – Acts 2:24, Acts 2:32, acts 2:38
If we want to see transformed lives in our churches then we’ve GOT to talk about JESUS! We’ve GOT to tell them that JESUS alone paid for our sins…and that through Him we are made right with God!!!
YES, we can talk about marriage, money, purpose and so on–we should–the Bible talks about these things. However, when we tell people how to have a good life without Christ I think we miss the point.
One more thing–when we preach the Word of God under the authority of the Spirit of God and lift up the Son of God…HE CHANGES LIVES! (See Acts 2:37) People were “cut to the heart!” God worked through preaching that honored Him…and I believe He STILL does that today!
