What I’ve Been Reading June 10, 2008
From time to time I like to share what I’ve been reading…so here’s a list of seven books that I’ve gone through over the past couple months or so…
In my opinion this book is an excellent piece of fiction writing that is loaded with some tricky theological issues. I’ve seen both positive and negative reviews on it…but I can say that, for the most part, I enjoyed it. It made me think…and I love books that make me do that. It will definitely cause you to look and God in an entirely different way.
John Eldridge hit the ball out of the park with this one. I could not put it down. The thing I like the most is the fact that he went where I believe other Christian teachers are afraid to go…how to REALLY listen to the voice of God…and how to fight the spiritual battles that come our way. It really impacted me AND challenged me in a lot of areas.
Chic Fil A is one of my favorite restaurants on the planet. The service is always incredible and the food is awesome as well…so when I saw that a friend had dropped this book by the office for me–I devoured it. There are some EXCELLENT teachings on leadership in his writings…and you can read through the whole thing in less than an hour.
21 Irrefutable Laws Of LeadershipÂ
John Maxwell came out with the 10th anniversary issue of this book and actually revised a lot of it–adding some content and taking away some as well. I read it when it first came out…but I REALLY needed to read it this time because I am at a totally different place in life. If you are in ANY leadership position then I would HIGHLY recommend this book–it’s one of the TOP THREE leadership books ever written…in my opinion!
This book was WAAAAYYYYY overdue. After reading it while on vacation I came back and told our entire SMT that they had to read it…and several of them then took the teams they lead through it. AMAZING! I have always admired Thom’s work–but this, in my opinion was his best yet! Basically the thesis is the church can accomplish more by doing less. I believe that this book should be required reading by every single person who thinks he or she may one day serve in a leadership position at a church. WOW!
I didn’t like this book! :-) Seriously, fasting is not one of the spiritual disciples that I do very well…so I intentionally put off reading this book; however, I really felt God prompting me to dig in and find out more about this subject. I can honestly say that this is one of the best books I’ve read on it…and Jentezen did an incredible job and unpacking a topic that isn’t heard much about these days–especially here in the South!
I think Andy Stanley could write a book on how to sell shoes and I would buy it and learn from it!!! Seriously, this book (another quick read) should be required reading for anyone in a leadership position. Andy gives some VERY practical steps on how to cast (and continually cast) compelling vision.
Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See
Charisse REALLY likes this book…and the scary thing is that Lucretia has it memorized. She is also fond of “Ten Little Ladybugs” and “The Birthday Monsters!” :-)
