WiBo Notes May 22, 2008
I didn’t have wifi during the conference…so here is the “Big Idea(s)” that I took away from each speaker.
- God is HUGE and our dreams are too small.
- One of our problems is that we stop dreaming and start imitating the people around us.
- We need dreams that are WAY beyond our ability to accomplish without God’s help.
- There are people who have never heard that God loves them. He asked, “How is it possible that I lived in America and no one ever told me that God loves me?” DANG!
- Eight million LESS people are going to church today than 20 years ago…we have a problem.
- The most messed up people in the world wanted to hang out with Jesus–do the most messed up people want to hang out with you? (DANG AGAIN!)
- Most churches are not impacting their community; in fact, they are getting in the way.
- Many people are unaware and uninspired when it comes to church.
- Spiritual interest is growing in our culture–they just aren’t taking the questions to church. We are answering questions that they aren’t asking.
- People ARE on a spiritual journey…they are just taking it without Jesus.
- We don’t “fall” into sin but rather exchange our object of worship.
- You WILL worship & serve…you were created to be captivated by something bigger than yourself.
- Most of the time we are clueless about our idols!
- When we say, “When I get BLANK–whatever that BLANK is is our idol.”
- I am completely sinful YET I am fully accepted!
- I am a bigger sinner than I thought but He is a bigger Savior than I thought!
- If we stay connected (John 15:5) fruit happens!
- We need to constantly ask ourselves the questions, “Is Jesus enough?”
- A sailboat has to rely on the power of the wind and constantly be willing to adjust its sails and rudder to harness the power the wind provides–we need to be willing to do the same with the Holy Spirit.
I didn’t get to hear Mark Dever (except for a few minutes…and he was incredible!) AND…I had to leave after I spoke…so I missed Ed Stetzer…but heard he KNOCKED it out of the park! (Of course!)
Overall…I thought this conference was OUTSTANDING! Seriously, Ben did an incredible job…Jay ran around like a chicken with his head cut off to make things happen…and there were several people behind the scenes that made it all come together.
Every speaker was incredible…and God used each one of them to seriously challenge me…and encourage me as well!
Travel Highlights From Day Three… May 21, 2008
Here is my day…
- Got up at 3:00 to hit the Word & then the gym…awesome!
- REALLY embarrassed myself at the airport…another story for another time! :-)
- Got on a plane & stayed there for a REALLY LONG TIME!!!
- Landed in ATL and had a great time hanging out with Ron Sylvia…brilliant guy!
- Our flight to DC was delayed because “they could not find the crew.” WHICH…to me was a bit concerning. If the crew didn’t know the gate they were supposed to be at…then how in the world could they be trusted to find DC?
- The lady behind the ticket counter was not having a good day…so I smiled at her…and it made absolutely zero difference.
- A young lady on the plane looked at me and said, “You’re Mark Driscoll.” I’ve been called a lot of things…but never Mark! WOW! I told her I wasn’t…and she didn’t believe me. I finally convinced her…I think.
- Finally made it to DC and got some REAL FOOD! All Tony and I had eaten for the day was eggs they served on the plane.
- Got to see Ben tonight…and Jay…and Tim…and Brad…love these environments…not only are they good for learning but also for renewing friendships.
On a serious note…God is SERIOUSLY rocking my face off right now. It’s pretty awesome…when He speaks to me He usually does so in multiple ways….I think because I am clueless and it takes that to get my attention He is REALLY stretching me both personally and professionally right now in ways He never has before! WOW! Great stuff!
WOW…God is so good to me!
I can’t WAIT to get home tomorrow. I MISS ‘CRETIA and CHARISSE!!! This weekend I am focusing ALL of my time on them…can’t wait!!!
Travel Highlights From Day Two… May 21, 2008
Here are a few thoughts before hitting the hay…
- Had a GREAT night of sleep. Got up & decided to go for a run outside and breath in the smog.
- Halfway through my run I remembered that I really needed to get some new running shoes!
- Our host pastor from Saddleback brought Tony and I coffee from Starbucks this morning…which IS evidence that these people out here REALLY love Jesus!
- Rick Warren brought the heat today…I posted notes from his first and second session…trust me, it is worth the time it takes to read them–ESPECIALLY if you are a pastor.
- I was able to have a brief conversations with Mark Driscoll, Erwin McManus, Mark Batterson, Bobby Gruenwald and some guy who said he knew Gary Lamb!!!
- Got to participate on a panel with pastors today on Saddlebacks stage and discuss the aspect of fellowship in the church…I took a lot of notes…those guys were SMART!
- I had a guy tell me today that his father received Christ three weeks ago after listening to a NewSpring podcast…I nearly lost it!
- Another guy from Yuma, Arizona told me that he listens to our services every week–AMAZING.
- Had supper tonight with Tony & Los at Lucile’s Smokehouse BBQ…awesome stuff.
- Got to head to bed…getting up at 3:00!!! Our flight leaves at 6:30…going to be on an airplane ALL DAY LONG…don’t get into DC until around 6:30–please pray for me!!! :-)
One more thing…I can honestly say that Rick Warren is one of the most humble and straight forward guys I’ve ever met. God used him today to SERIOUSLY challenge my heart and my leadership. If you are a member or regular attender of NewSpring…pray for Rick today…it’s through leaders like him that God usually speaks to me & takes me to uncomfortable places in which I’ve never been…
And…today…God used him to set me on fire!!! I have a lot to think about…and the vision for NewSpring Church JUST GOT BIGGER!!!!
Rick Warren’s Second Session–INCREDIBLE! May 20, 2008
Here goes…my mind is still spinning from the first session!
What causes relational conflict? Immaturity. It’s easy to measure financial and evangelical growth…but how do you measure spiritual growth?
Marriage counseling can be summed up in two words–GROW UP!
The proof in spiritual maturity is love! I Corinthians 13:11!
Most churches are full of people who talk and relate to others in childish ways.
Maturity is relational–not intellectual. Jesus said love God and love others are the two MOST IMPORTANT commands.
A person can attend church all of their life and never mature…they are cranky, rude, irritable…how can some people attend all of their life and not love people?
The church should focus on two main aspects of meeting together–large group and small group.
Sometimes you have to kill something in order to start something new.
Rick said at one time his prayer was not, “Oh God, build a great church,” but, “Oh God, get me through Sunday!”
Discipleship is about turning the audience into an army!
“We practice church discipline in this church. we’ve disciplined people for not paying their bills. We’ve disciplined people for borrowing money from other church members and not paying them back!”
If maturity was perfection then none of us would be mature.
One day pastors will stand before God and be held accountable for their spiritual maturity! (DANG)
How do you know when a church/person is mature? Simple–when something is mature it bears fruit! Matthew 7:17-20! John 15:8
Eight Laws Of Spiritual Growth…
#1 – Spiritual Growth in Incarnational
Spiritual growth is Christ in you…being a Christian is not trying to be like Christ…it is Christ living through you! (Galatians 2:20)
Spiritual growth is both mystical and practical. I Corinthians 3:6…in spiritual growth we have a part and God has a part! Philippians 2:12-13
We are to work out our salvation while God works in our salvation!
#2 – Spiritual Growth Is Intentional
You have to choose to grow! We grow by making commitments. You are as close to God as you choose to be…stop blaming others (husband, wife, friends…)
Get people to make commitment…not move to it. Once people make the commitment then they grow through it.
Jesus first asked people to follow Him…that’s it! It was three years later He asked people to take up their cross. The level of commitment deepened with time.
We need to be a balanced church that challenges people to both “come and see” and “come and die!” This is a process.
Everyone will NOT BE at the same level of commitment.
To the non believer Jesus said “come and see,” to the believer Jesus said “go and tell!”
Once again…commitment MUST be asked for!!! The heat must constantly be turned up!
Providing message notes helps people to remember the message–we forget around 95% of what we hear withing 72 hours. The problem many times is not a matter of dedication but rather retention!
Why use outline and handouts? #1, It increases attention. #2, It increases retention. #3, It increases participation. #4, You can cover more material in less time. #5, You can view the message for years to come. #6, It is the basis for small group discussions. #7, You can use multiple translations. #8, Unbelievers don’t bring Bibles–they don’t have Bibles…and even if they did they would not know where to find the passage!
#3 – Spiritual Growth Is Incremental
it happens in steps, not overnight. I Corinthians 3:18! A baby has to learn to breathe, to eat, to walk, to talk…what is true physically is true spiritually.
You’ve got to know Christ before you can love Him. You’ve got to love Him before you can serve Him. You have to serve Him before you can share Him…
#4 – Spiritual Growth Is Personal
Reality is we grow according to how we are shaped. II Corinthians 5:13
#5 – Spiritual Growth Is Habitual
We grow by developing good habits.
How do we develop habits? #1 – Give homework at the end of a message. (It’s not just about belief–it’s about behavior). #2 – Challenge people to journal. #3 – Provide a daily e-mail devotional/podcast.
#6 – Spiritual Growth Is Relational
A huge myth is that you can become spiritually mature on your own. We can only grow in community. American have gotten so into isolation that we don’t believe this.
If you are not in community then there are at least 58 commands in the Bible that you can’t do.
You learn to love by being around unlovely people.
Knowledge makes us feel important…but love IS what is important. Hebrews 10:25
Three tools for relational growth – small groups, spiritual coaches, retreats!
#7 – Spiritual Growth Is Multi-Dimensional
Real maturity is so much more about knowing…it is about doing.
To be a Pharisee…you had to memorize the Torah! And these are the people that Jesus went off on! They KNEW but didn’t do!
We’ve got to be about public charity and personal purity!
#8 – Spiritual Growth Is Seasonal
There are times of growth and times of consolidation! In the fall and winter it may not look like you are growing…but you are actually putting down roots! (DANG!!!)
Just as sure as winter comes…so does spring and summer. NOTHING is on all of the time. No church can be in a continual state of growth.
Don’t worry about the speed & size of your church…worry about the growth of your people.
We grow in spurts! Pastors can’t push their people all of the time
Growth seasons are done around Saddleback during campaigns. “I love my church campaign, I want to grow campaign, etc.”
How are you moving people from “come and see” to “come and die?”
Rick Warren’s First Session–REALLY Worth Your Time!!! WOW!!! May 20, 2008
Here are some of the things that really stuck out to me from session one…AMAZING!!!
Pastors are the most underrated change agents in the world! (AMEN!)
If I am a farmer it takes more than prayer to grow a crop…it takes skill. You are never wasting time when you are sharpening your ax (enhancing your skills.)
Growing churches require growing pastors. If I am on fire it is contagious. When God is working in your life–people get excited about it.
When Peter caught the huge catch of fish in Luke 5 it just about sank his boat…he needed the help of his partners. We need to partner with each other so that our boats do not sink.
Rick is STILL learning! He took a year & didn’t speak at a conference here @ Saddleback…he took a year and traveled and simply listened to pastors. He models the fact that leaders are learners.
“It’s not about you” isn’t just a great sentence in a book…it’s a motto that we should live our lives by. (John 3:30)
Most church networks around the world don’t communicate or cooperate with each other. (My thought – what COULD happen if the churches across the world could actually unite?)
The Reformation in England would have never happened without the printing press…the 95 Thesis would have died on the wall of the doors of a church…but someone took it and printed it…technology was a MAJOR tool in the reformation.
About 15-20 years ago God gave us a new tool…the internet. The internet was NOT given to us for pornography…it was given to us to expand God’s kingdom!
(My thought…if the Reformation took place as a result of the printing press…WHAT IN THE WORLD IS ON THE HORIZON with the technology that is now in our hands!)
We have the possibility of a second reformation in front of us!
When God wants to renew a church He always takes it through the same five stages…
First = personal renewal…it starts in the heart. If God is going to do something in your church He will begin it with you. It begins with falling in love with Jesus…again. And it is not about rules or religion…it’s about Jesus!
Second = relational renewal…end the war with God and then end it with other people. (Love God, Love Others!) When have this in your church the gossip/conflict goes down and the joy & unity goes up.
How know the first two have taken place? First…the singing gets better. Harmony creates harmony! When people love God and others they enjoy singing together. Second…people hang around longer after church is over.
Most churches never grow past these first two renewals…there’s more. (These two renewals usually happen through the traditional revival services.)
Third = missional renewal…this is when the church realizes that it is not a “bless me click!” This is when the church understands it has a purpose.
When you get the first three lined up…you can’t keep a church from growing.
Fourth = cultural renewal…this is when the culture of the church begins to change. A pastor cannot change the culture of the church…only God can…and it comes as a result of the first three renewals.
Fifth = structural renewal…you cannot put new wine in old wineskins! As the church grows the structure has to change. There is no perfect structure for a church…that is why Scripture doesn’t speak to structure. What works with 50 people won’t work with 150.
Institutions are ALWAYS the last things to change! (Seminaries, denominations, etc.) Institutions are there to protect the change of the previous generation. (DANG!)
Seminaries are usually 60-80 years behind the change.
In 2003 Rick made a list of young pastors, up and comers, people who he thought he needed to be praying for. Today half of those men are no longer in the ministry!!! Burned out, flamed out, dropped out. It is EASY to make a big initial splash!
Ministry is not a 50 yard dash…it’s a marathon! You don’t want to have a perfect season and then lose at the Super Bowl!!!
Ministry is “a life always under pressure.”
Paul was put in hopeless situations…but he never gave up because he knew the secrets of personal renewal. (II Corinthians 4:16)
How to do personal renewal – learn to enjoy the grace of God. (II Corinthians 4:1) Paul knew his ministry was all because of God’s grace and mercy. Satan is often whispering in the ears of a pastor, “you are not good enough.” But we need to understand that God knew every stupid mistake we were going to make in ministry and still chose us!
I don’t deserve to be saved…much less in ministry! (AMEN!!!) I am just a trophy of grace!
When I enjoy His grace then I don’t feel like I need to prove myself. (Which is the root of being a workaholic.) Your value has nothing to do with the size of your church! (DANG!)
When I enjoy His grace I don’t have to wallow in my failures!
NEVER confuse prominence and significance!!! Your ministry matters to God!!! Every church is BIG in God’s eyes–HE DIED FOR IT!!!
Some guys preach it all their life and have never felt the unconditional, unrelenting love of God!
Until you settle the issue of grace you will fall into the trap of trying to win the approval of man!
We don’t need 50% of our guys flaking out before they reach the finish line!
When you FINALLY feel the love of God you won’t struggle with inferiority & won’t worry about what the deacons think!
“Is your church deacon possessed?” (Now that’s funny!)
We need to get past the idea that we have something to prove!!!
Ministry is RECEIVED, not ACHIEVED!
Second, if you are going to last in ministry you have to be authentic. If you try to live a life to win the approval of others you will always be under stress, manipulate people and be scared of “being discovered.” (II Corinthians 4:2) Paul had NOTHING to hide!
You don’t have to be perfect for God to use you…but you do have to be honest. “Everybody knows my weaknesses at Saddleback because I talk about them.”
Obvious imperfections in a pastor is a good thing. We never grow from people’s strengths…we grow from their weaknesses.
You have to decide whether or not you want to impress people or influence people. You can impress them from a distance…but can only influence them when you get up close…and they can see you warts and all.
When you are not authentic it only gets worse for you…that’s why many guys have to keep changing churches.
You can fake love for people! And the church knows when you love them.
Third, if you are going to last in ministry you have to remember that it’s not about you…and when you forget that you either get bitter or prideful. You take everything personally. (The average pastor leaves a church for about seven critics.) If the pastor stays the critics leave!
II Corinthians 4:5, “it’s not about you” is the most counter culture statement that you can say in the world…everything in our society says that it’s all about you.
When you figure out why you do what you do…God will show you the how. If you are doing ministry for yourself or for approval…you will not last.
You have to constantly be asking yourself, “why are you doing what you are doing?” Why are you in ministry? Why are you planting a church? It’s not about you!
A lot of guys start off as servants and end up as celebrities. II Corinthians 4:5 & II Corinthians 4:11, Paul did what he did for Jesus!!! II Corinthians 11:23-28, “you think you’ve got problems!”
People always want success without suffering! (DANG!)
If we are doing what we do for Jesus’ sake then it doesn’t should not matter to us what He’s doing in other churches–STOP COMPARING.
If you forget that it’s not about you then you will crumble under criticism. If you are going to call the shots you are going to take the shots. The most blessed ministries WILL be criticized…and not from unbelievers…but for believers!!!
If you are going to have a Christlike ministry then you will be misunderstood…and you will be criticized by religious people. The lost people LOVED Jesus…the religious people could not stand Him!!!
Some people haven’t learned that you can be friends with someone and still not agree with them.
If you have no friends that are unbelievers then you are not Christlike! If all your friends are other Calvinists or Charismatics or Baptists or…then you have a lot of growing up to do…and you are NOT Christlike.
Mark 15:10 – this is why they killed Jesus! Most attacks in ministry come against you because of jealousy!
When you are little, they ignore you. When you are growing, they criticize you. When you are large, they resent you. SO IGNORE THEM!
Just remember…it’s NOT ABOUT YOU!!!
Fourth, if you are going to make it in ministry then you need to accept your human limitations. You are NOT superman, you are human. You can’t fix everyone’s problem. You can’t fix stupid…and the Bible says not to answer fools!
The pastor who is available to people all the time isn’t worth much when he is there.
II Corinthians 4:7 – our frail bodies are jars of clay.
God often puts His greatest gifts in the weakest individuals…that way His power shines through. Other than Jesus God has always used flawed instruments.
There is NOTHING perfect on this planet EXCEPT the Word of God.
Four stages in dealing with weaknesses–denial, then hiding, then accepting, now he glories in them…and it all goes back to grace.
Humility is NOT denying your strengths but rather being honest about your weaknesses.
It’s not about church growth…it’s about people growth.
The church isn’t dependent upon my creativity and ingenuity in order to make it happen! It’s HIS Church!
Church growth doesn’t happen overnight…when God wants to grow a mushroom it takes six hours, when He wants to grow a mushroom He takes 60 years. Do you want your church to be a mushroom or an oak tree?
Saddleback has baptized 20k people in the history of the church!!! (DANG)
Fifth, if you want to last in ministry, DO EVERYTHING OUT OF LOVE!
Some of you are asking, “Where do I start?” How about your wife? (Dead silence in the room.)
Guys…listen to your wife!!! The purpose of marriage is not to make you happy but to make you holy!
“I can’t tell you the number of times my wife has saved me from embarrassment.”
“How is it that the people we love the most we spend the least amount of time with?” (Dead silence!)
“Your wife is God’s gift to you!”
II Corinthians 4:15…Paul did what he did out of love. Paul kept on going because he knew he was helping other people.
The people in your church are not for your benefit…you are there for theirs.
The truth is…the bigger your church gets the more problems you have.
The church that doesn’t want to grow is saying to the world, “You go to hell…we’re doctrinally correct…you go to hell.”
Every church caters to somebody. If you don’t believe me–change your music style next week. A church either caters to selfish church people are either those who don’t know Christ.
It takes UNSELFISH people go grow a church.
“I don’t care if you love to preach…do you love the people you preach to?”
I am unafraid to tell people the truth because I love them.
Sixth, if you want to make it in ministry–make time for daily renewal. Divert daily–withdraw weekly and abandon annually.
Do things on a daily basis that de-stress you. If you are going to de-stress…don’t do something competitive.
“Are you taking a day off every week?” (Dead silence!!!) God made the Sabbath for our benefit. If you are not taking a day off you are breaking one of the ten commandments. Do NOT call it your day off…call it your Sabbath!!!
A lot of pastors are like poor photographs…overexposed and under developed. II Corinthians 4:16!
For you to renew…you’ve got to have a plan (make a list) and a partner! NONE of us are very good in balancing ourselves. We have an amazing ability to lie to ourselves about what we are doing!
“WHO PASTORS YOU?” Every pastor needs a pastor. Don’t just have one pastor–have ten!!! “I have mentors in different areas because they are all good at different things.”
Pastors are lonely!!!
If you are serious about fellowship you have to set aside your ego and form a pastors small group. A SMALL group! If you get more than six in a room it will not work…that is why most pastors prayer breakfasts are worthless.
Don’t wait for someone to build a fellowship for you!
You will not last in ministry without peers around you.
Pastors in the area should not be your competition…they should be your best friends.
Seventh, if you are going to last in ministry then you need to live in light of eternity. You lose your perspective when you are tired!!!
Most pastors want to resign on Monday!
There are three motivations–internal, external and ETERNAL! Paul did what he did because, not of what he saw, but because of what he did not see.
“I’m not looking at here and now…I am looking to eternity.” When you do this–you can see your troubles as small. Only he who sees the invisible can accomplish the impossible.
A mans greatness is determined by what it takes to discourage him. (Via Jerry Falwell.) What does it take to discourage you? A negative comment? A blogger?
The secret of overcoming criticism is outlasting, out loving, our serving and our praying your critics.
DON’T GIVE UP!!! It is always too soon to quit. God’s purpose for your ministry is GREATER than the problems you are facing right now!!!
Nothing happens in your church until you get personal renewal down!!!
Have You Ever Felt Forgotten By God? May 20, 2008
Be honest!
Every Christian who has walked with Christ for any amount of time will admit (if they are honest) that there has seemingly been a time in their life where God was nowhere to be found.
Maybe it was a marriage gone bad, a rebellious child, a lost job, an alarming medical report or an intense battle with an addiction.
And…for some reason…prayer didn’t work. Reading the Bible didn’t work. Going to church didn’t work. Fasting didn’t work. NOTHING SEEMED TO WORK…and the more desperate you cried out for God the more seemingly distant He became.
Ever been there? Are you there right now?
I was thinking about those times in my life the other day after spending some time with Charisse. She’s gotten to be quite the adventurer…and loves to climb the stairs in our home.
For her to climb the stairs is…well…it’s hard. The staircase is long…and she literally has to strain to make it up all the way. (She occasionally stops to take a breather.)
On Saturday morning she began climbing and was completely oblivious to my presence behind her. She thought she was alone. She thought she was doing the work all by herself…
BUT…there I was…right behind her, watching her and holding my hands out behind her…just in case she fell…
She fell…but…I caught her and put her right back on the step. She never turned around to thank me. She never said, “I never knew you were there.” She just kept going and finally made it to the top…in her mind…all by herself; however, she would have never achieved those heights had it not been for her father being willing to walk behind her…one step at a time.
David, a man after God’s own heart said in best in Psalm 23:4–POWERFUL verse…he said that he KNEW that even though he was walking through the valley of the shadow of death…that He KNEW God was with him.
I personally believe that the times we maybe feel that God is the most distant…He’s actually right with us, arms out, waiting to catch us when we fall. And when we think we’ve accomplished something all by ourselves–we haven’t.
God will, at times, allow us to not have the FEELING that we are so close so that our FAITH will be FOUNDED on FACT. The fact is…He’s with me (and you) right now. The fact is…when we cry out He hears us. The fact is…every hair on our head is numbered. The fact is…He gathers our tears in a bottle. The fact is…before we experienced the current pain in our lives He KNEW what we were going to go through…and HE’S RIGHT THERE…whether we feel Him or not.
I’ve forgotten God at times in my life…we all have; however, there has NEVER been a time in your life that He has forgotten about you.
Travel Highlights From Day One… May 19, 2008
So here was my day today (Monday!)
- Got up at 3:45, had an incredible quiet time and then did a 30 minute workout.
- Tony was at my house at 5:45 so we could head to GSP to catch a plane.
- Plane was delayed flying out of GSP…but we still made our connecting flight in ATL
- This guy sat two rows in front of me.
- Took forever to get my luggage. (Tony took his on board with him…I can’t…if I pack one pair of shoes it requires an extra large suitcase. I wear a 14!)
- Met with a really cool agent and his sons (who are also agents) & discussed a potential book deal for four hours…I’m VERY excited.
- Tony and I got lost…IN THE PARKING GARAGE! We literally could not find our rental car and I had to keep hitting the panic button on the key chain so that it would make noise.
- Tomorrow I get to go to this church and participate in a conference that Rick is putting on. They’ve asked me to be on a panel & help participate in a discussion. Here is a list of the participants…I am WAY over my head.
- I am really looking forward to hearing Rick speak!
That’s it–good night!!!!
