Can You Hear His Voice?
What God is teaching me through being a dad is amazing.
The other night I came home and ‘Cretia was hanging out on the couch with Charisse. I was quite a ways a way from her and I said out loud, “How’s my girl?”
Her complete countenance changed…she got a very serious look on her face and began to look around the room for me. Lucretia told me, “say something else,” so I did and she REALLY started looking for me.
I got closer and closer to her until we made eye contact…which made her smile, which made me smile! Lucretia looked at me and said, “She knows her daddy’s voice.”
I still experiment with this…I walk into her room sometimes to wake her from her nap and instead of just picking her up from her crib I stand beside it and call her name. She always opens her eyes and begins to look for me…and usually when we make eye contact she smiles, which makes me smile.
She’s my child…she knows my voice…and when she hears it she looks for me until we make eye contact, which makes both of us smile.
Being a dad has made the words of Jesus in John 10:3-5 more real than ever before…Jesus said that His sheep know His voice, and that they follow Him.
I can’t help but think of our Heavenly Father calling out our name. Sometimes we choose to ignore Him because we think we know best; however, the times I have locked eyes with Him because of Him calling out to me has brought great joy to my life…and I just think when we respond to His calling our name it makes Him smile. Isn’t that true of any Father?
When was the last time you clearly heard to voice of the Lord? Let me share four things before closing…
#1 - The voice of God will not lead you into sin! That would compromise His character…which the Bible describes as Holy! AND…sin destroys! As a loving father I would never ask my child to do something that would harm her.
#2 - The voice of God will not lead you to do something contrary to the Scriptures. I have literally had people tell me that they were having sex with someone they were not married to–but that was ok because they felt that God was approving of their behavior. Uh…NOPE! God’s Word is our standard, and if ever we doubt what He wants–He’s written it down!
#3 - When you are seeking the voice of God in regards to a decision and it isn’t clear what you are supposed to do–do whatever you heard Him clearly say the last time you clearly heard from Him!
#4 - God wants you to hear His voice more than you want to hear it! Trust me…when it comes to getting my child’s attention…I want that more than anything…even in those times when she is completely unaware that I am even in the room!!!
That’s it for now…I’ve got to go hug my child!
