My Bible Journey August 31, 2007

When I get to heaven (to the surprise of many I will be there!) I can’t wait to meet Isaiah!  God is using him to rock my world…here are a few more thoughts on my journey through Scripture.

  • Isaiah 46:3-4 – Every once in a while I will hear it, “NewSpring can’t keep going on like this!”  Uh…this is a partial truth…it can’t keep going on like this…it can ONLY GET BETTER!  This verse rocked my world!
  • Isaiah 48:17 – Leadership is as easy as listening to God–I am trying to make more time to listen!
  • Isaiah 49:6 – This verse challenged me to continually have BIG VISION!  The problem with the church today isn’t that God is small–but rather our vision is!
  • Isaiah 49:13 – At times I am emotional when worshiping God–and that seems to be ok with Him!
  • Isaiah 50:4 – Why do I, at times, stress over message preparation?  If I listen to God His word says that He will give me the words, instructing me every morning!
  • Isaiah 50:7 – WOW, this verse came at the right time!
  • Isaiah 51:2 – God is definitely into growth–just look at His track record!
  • Isaiah 51:11 – I want to see more and more of this!!!
  • Isaiah 51:12 – Oh, snap!  DO NOT FEAR MAN!
  • Isaiah 53:1-6 – JESUS–THANK YOU!!!
  • Isaiah 54:2-3 – YES!  I honestly believe this is getting ready to happen here at NewSpring!  It’s GAMETIME!
  • Isaiah 54:17 – I NEEDED THIS!!!  With all that has taken place this week–this verse absolutely blessed and encouraged me.
  • Isaiah 55:8-9 – God is smarter than me!  I want to learn to think more like Him!
  • Isaiah 58:11 – The Lord will guide me (and you) continually!!!
  • Isaiah 60:4-5 – We are seeing this!!!

Isaiah 61:4 - I read this just this morning…and I could not stop thinking about it.  I believe there is a group of pastors out there that this verse applies to!  The church in America is NOT in good shape, the population is INCREASING in our country and the church is DECREASING!  In a time where we should be experiencing EXPLOSIVE growth the church is in an EXPLOSIVE decline.  BUT…there is a group of pastors out there who God has called to rebuild the ruins…to repair what is broken…and guys, I am so glad to be partnered with you!  STAY ON THE WALL…DO NOT COME DOWN TO SLING MUD!  STAY FOCUSED ON JESUS!

One more thing about Isaiah 61:4 – When I read it I think of those at NewSpring who volunteer…people who give their time to selflessly serve each and every week.  If this is you–THEN YOU are a part of this verse…God is using you to build the church…you are making a difference…lives are being changed…and as we continue to build together I believe that God will continue to allow us to see Ephesians 3:20 come to life right in front of our eyes!!!

Thurday Night Couch Thoughts! August 30, 2007

Here are some things running through my mind tonight…

  • Tony’s post about criticism being a good thing made me smile.
  • College football is ON this weekend; in fact, it is on right now! I don’t really care about LSU or Mississippi State–but LSU does have a 5′ 5″ 160 pound running back that can FLY!!!
  • Charisse literally projectile poo poo’d on ‘Cretia THREE TIMES yesterday! It was amazing! AND…’Cretia laughed all three times…my wife is awesome!
  • THIS IS NOT a political endorsement…so I don’t want to hear it! I’ve always heard God and politics do not mix–apparently someone forgot to tell Mike Huckabee in a Republican debate. I do not know this guy personally–but this is one of the most SOLID answers I have ever seen a politician give–DANG! Check out the video here!
  • Ken had a post here that made me laugh and think about his son actually swallowing a screw! Please pray for Gardner…Ken informed me this evening that the screw has not been passed and surgery is a possibility.
  • I HATE CATS! Yes, even yours–please don’t send me a stupid e-mail about how I would love your cat–I wouldn’t! BUT…Ken had yet another post that, even though I am not a cat lover it made me laugh out loud–check it out–SERIOUSLY!
  • This coming Sunday we wrap up the Illuminate series at NewSpring. I hate to see this one end–what we have seen the Lord do has been incredible…but it’s not over!!! I think Sunday could be a day that quite a few people will ALWAYS remember!
  • Thanks to everyone for all of the prayers and encouragement this week! I had something happen to me this week that I NEVER in a million years thought would EVER take place…I can’t believe it! I will be sharing more in the coming months!
  • NEXT Sunday we are beginning a new series called “Gametime.” Folks…this will be THE MOST exciting series we’ve ever done in the history of our church! God blowing our minds…and we are going to take a look at the steps He is leading us to take next!
  • YES, I will be at the game on Monday night!!! GO TIGERS!!!

Three Questions I Ask When It Comes To Criticism (UPDATED) August 30, 2007

Let me set this up…

Back in 1996 I kept hearing about this pastor who “watered down” the Gospel and was leading people to “hell in a hand basket” named Bill Hybels. Every time his name was mentioned around me pastors seemed to get really mad. I was clueless as to who this guy was–but I figured if all the “godly” people I was hanging out with hated him then so should I.

THEN I found out that he and some other guy named John Maxwell were doing a conference together in Charlotte…so I went. (I had a friend on staff at another church who was forbidden to go by his pastor because Hybels was speaking!) I was armed with my pen and notebook on the front row, ready to catch Hybels in heresy, thus being able to participate in the tearing down of a fellow brother in the name of Jesus.

I was blown away! I watched this man weep–WEEP over people far from God (something I had never seen my “buddies” that blasted him do!) I listened to him as he taught on the spiritual gift of leadership. And I was blown away at how much he kept mentioning the name of Jesus…something I was told he did not do!

God taught me a lesson through that experience…a HARD ONE…and now, before I say anything critical of anyone I go over these three questions…

#1 – Do I really know this person?

I can honestly say that personally, around 99% of the criticism I receive personally is from people who have never met me…most have never been to NewSpring. It is really easy to take one sentence from a blog or a sermon and then come to hundreds of conclusions as to where someone “probably” stand theologically and morally…it is much tougher to get to know someone before you make a decision.

I remember when Joel Osteen was on Larry King Live and didn’t do so well when he was asked the question about hell. The next day blogs and websites were blasting him, calling him a heretic…and some even questioned his faith!

I remember being asked about it and saying, “First of all…I don’t know Joel. Secondly…I would HATE for someone to form an opinion of me based on a 30 second clip from a live television show!”

By the way…I had a chance to meet Joel last September and the dude is one of the most real and humble men I have ever met. He talked openly about the Larry King interview and admitting that wasn’t his finest hour…he also said that the next day his church issued a statement affirming their belief in hell–but that didn’t get too much press…the blood was in the water and the sharks came out!!!

#2 – Would I say this face to face?

The answer, the majority of the time, is no! I have discovered the internet, mostly, is a place for cowards who do not have the guts to do the Matthew 18:15-17 thing–but for some reason they think it is OK to send an anonymous e-mail or place a comment on a blog with a fake e-mail address.

I have heard of people who have been critical of me openly…and so when I see them I make it a point to speak with them. Not once has someone said, “Hey man, I think we differ on opinions here–let’s try to come to an understanding.”

I have some really great friends that I differ with theologically and in certain areas of methodology…but I have disagreed with them one on one…and in doing so have been stretched and challenged as to what I believe and why I believe it.

It takes guts to go one on one…anyone can blog!

#3 – Will I cause dissension among the brothers by doing this?

According to Proverbs 6:16-19 God HATES it when someone does this!

One night I heard of a church that was growing in popularity…but had some very different biblical views. I went to their website and listened to a message and, by the end of it, I was SO ANGRY. The speaker had basically butchered Scripture to affirm a very unbiblical behavior! I started to blog about this guy until…I thought, “I don’t even know this dude…and by doing this I am going to release a firestorm against him…is that right?”

Don’t get me wrong–I was still mad…but I did not want to participate in something that I knew God was going to hate–that would pretty much be considered sin!!!

The world is watching…and when Christians cause Christians to get mad at other Christians…somehow I just don’t believe God is pleased.

Those are just three questions I ask–they’ve helped me…maybe they will help someone else.

UPDATE:  God has a funny sense of humor!  This past week I have had two of the most direct, critical attacks that I have EVER received.  (I’ve also been more encouraged that I ever have as well!!!)  When I was attacked I wanted so bad to respond…to lash out…to vent…whatever the heck you want to call it.

I was considering blogging about the experiences and so I asked the opinion of my wife last night at supper.  I, of course, built a strong case as to why I SHOULD blog and, to be honest, was just seeking her affirmation.

She looked at me and said, “That post you have coming out Thursday…I can’t remember how you said it exactly…but what was point number three?”

BAM!  God used her to remind me that I was being hypocritical.  That, yes, I was free to blog about the attacks…but in doing so more controversy would come into the kingdom and the cause of Christ would suffer.

I want so badly for God’s people to act like God’s people–but at times I am just as guilty for the things I become angry at others for!  I am a work in progress…I know stuff like this is going to begin to happen more frequently and so my prayer is that I can ignore it and continually follow Jesus in whatever He asks me to do!

Should We Be Innovative? August 29, 2007

As I read in blog world I see the argument pop up from time to time, “Should the church be innovative?” To be honest–it surprises me that people are even arguing about this–the answer is HECK YES!

I know there are some people out there who have a problem with churches being innovative, using modern methods to communicate a timeless message. These people claim they HATE the church being “worldly,” yet these same people…

  • Have a blog or website (neither one of which are in Scripture…so that would make them “worldly”) that they use to attack with.
  • Have air conditioner in their homes and…even (GASP) their churches!
  • Used a car (a worldly invention) to go back and forth to church in.
  • Have running water AND electricity in their homes and churches–the Apostle Paul had neither!
  • Have a cell phone in–would Jesus REALLY have used one of those?

You get the point. I think people do not have a problem with innovation…but rather when something that is innovative isn’t in their comfort zone…THAT is when it becomes wrong.

In reading Scripture lately I have came across a couple of passages, Isaiah 42:9 and Isaiah 43:18-19, in which God basically says, “I am an innovative God…I am doing some brand new things…STOP focusing on the past!”

Now, according to Genesis 1:27 we are created in the image of God–it would seem to stand that we should be innovative as well.

I personally think that one of the main reasons for a lack of innovation in the church is laziness–people just don’t want to work. Yep–innovation takes hard work–and God is honored by that.

Let me ask a question–what if I came home every day at the same time and told Lucretia, “I love thee, I truly love thee–every hour I love thee–there is none more beautiful than you.” She might think that is nice the first time…but after about the third or fourth time she would wonder whether or not I really meant it…and by week number two she would know that this little poem was merely a ritual that I was going through to make me feel better about myself!

BUT…if I am fresh and creative in ways I express my love to her then the relationship says exciting and adventurous–not some ritualistic, boring partnership that is held together through insincere forms of expression and laziness.

We should worship Jesus with passion and honor…and in new and fresh ways. I am NOT against traditional styles of worship as long as they are sincere. However, I have been in way too many services where the hymns are sang with about as much passion as I just had when I changed Charisse’s diaper and then taunted as “the only way” to do church–which just is not a biblically based conclusion!

That is why I say that the church should be the most innovative place on the planet…we have the HOLY SPIRIT of GOD, who is pretty flippin’ creative, that fuels us…and I think not only should the church learn from the people who are reaching people (marketing) but also we should be so innovative and effective that they should learn from us as well.

One of my prayers lately is that God will continue to fill me with creative ideas and surround me with creative people…and He is doing it. I am excited about some of the steps we are going to be taking here at NewSpring in the next 12 months–these are exciting times and there are thousands and thousands of people to be reached with a message that never changes–but the methods that must!!!

Do You REALLY Want To Be Like Jesus? August 28, 2007

One of THE most overused phrases among Christians today is, “I just want to be more and more like Jesus.” HOLD ON–I am NOT saying that is something bad…it’s just that I don’t think that some people have a CLUE what they are talking about when they say those words!

People from a churched culture grow up with a “safe” picture of Jesus–he had feathered hair, wore a white robe with a purple sash, was a constant giver of hugs and carried a lamb where ever He went.

However, in reading Scripture that is NOT the Jesus I am seeing. I am discovering that if I want to become more and more like Jesus that I am going to have to drop my Sunday school perceptions and embrace the following…

#1 – Jesus Is A Warrior King!

Check out Revelation 19:11-16…never seen a picture of THAT in a Christian bookstore. One of my favorite stories is found in Matthew 21:12-16 where His passion is demonstrated by the fact that He whipped some tail! I am sick and tired of people saying that a Christian is always nice…a Christian is someone who is passionate for the things of God–which requires some table turning from time to time.

#2 – Jesus Purposefully Offended The Religious!

Keep something in mind–it wasn’t the atheists, agnostics or even the devil worshipers that murdered Jesus…but rather THE most religious people in that time period. Why? Because He was nice? NO! Because He…

  • Healed on Sunday…which in their mind was SINFUL! DON’T MISS THAT–these people MISSED a MIRACLE because it did not fit into their formula…and they considered Jesus “wrong” for doing what He did!
  • He hung out, even touched lepers…which was a no-no in that time period.
  • He went to a tax collectors house for a meal…which was a social declaration!
  • He went off in Matthew 23…calling the Pharisees “whitewashed tombs, sons of hell and snakes!”

Jesus was NOT concerned with making the religious happy–He was dangerous, on the edge–that’s who Jesus was!!!

#3 – Jesus Did Not Get Inward Focused!

Like it or not–Jesus didn’t go to a bookstore, get a theology book by a dead white guy, get a group of guys together that were just like Him and give the world the middle finger because He was obsessed with “going deep!”

If I meet one more group of guys who think they are becoming more like Jesus because they are theological superior to people (which, by the way, is PRIDE!) but do not know a lost person by name or refuse to exercise their spiritual gift…and yet claim to be godly…I am going to punch them in the throat! (For everyone who just got mad about that–please refer to #2!)

#4 – Jesus Offered Forgiveness, Not Condemnation!

Check this out…the people Jesus WAS nice to were the broken, the poor, the outcasts, the prostitutes…those whom society had thrown away! He didn’t yell at them! He didn’t look down His nose at them. He didn’t sit in a church pew and wonder, “Why are they here?” He offered them forgiveness–something that MANY churches today simply do not do!

You know what I mean…someone goes through a painful divorce and they are pushed out. A teenage girl gets pregnant and the other mothers in the church forbid their “angels” to hang out with her. I’ve seen it…so have you…and it ticks me off! Jesus NEVER told them their behavior was ok; in fact, He preached repentance…but He did not condemn them!

# 5 – Jesus Was Passionate About Obeying His Father!

Jesus had a passionate desire to obey God…He recognized His Father as the absolute authority on this planet…and went to the cross and gave His life as an act of obedience and worship.

Pastors will say that God reigns and is sovereign…and then they will back down before a board of deacons or elders because they fear them more that God. If you are going to be like Christ–obedience, not prostitution (being paid to perform a service) is required.

#6 – Jesus Had A Vision To Reach People!

I read on a website once that a vision could not be numeric…and I will have to say that I about threw up! Jesus had a desire to reach the NATIONS! (Matthew 28:18-20) Now I am not the smartest man on the planet…but that’s a lot of people.

Jesus said in Acts 1:8 to reach the ends of the earth–that’s a lot of people!

Jesus told three parables in Luke 15 about something lost being found…and then said the angels in heaven rejoice when people cross over the line of faith.

If Luke 19:10 is true…and there is a church out there that does not care about reaching people…I simply say you need to check your heart because hell is hot! Seriously–HOW could someone NOT care about people stepping over from death to life?

#7 – Jesus Was Not Normal!

Jesus, in His teaching and mentoring tactics, was different!

He taught with authority…He told stories…He didn’t go line by line, verse by verse through the OT…He used modern day illustrations…He connected with the hearts of the people…and they GOT IT!

He was not normal in who He surrounded Himself with–He didn’t go for the religious professionals but rather men who were crazy enough to believe and follow Him. He didn’t fit in with the religious system of the day…and they killed Him for it! (But He had the last laugh!!!)

Sunday Night Reflections August 26, 2007

I am almost positive that I do not have the words to describe what has taken place at NewSpring during this past month in our “Illuminate” series. God has BLOWN ME AWAY…there is no way that any one person OR group of people can take credit for what we’ve seen…only Jesus could have done this. Here are some of the highlights from today…and from this month.

  • On Saturday night our student ministry team did an event called Pulse…we had over 1,300 teenagers there and 270 received Christ!
  • Then today at NewSpring we saw 106 people receive Christ!!!
  • This month during this series we have seen around 800 people cross the line of faith!
  • THANK YOU to everyone who made today run smoothly…you guys REALLY stepped up BIG TIME…we had room at 9:15 and 11:15 because SO MANY of you moved to 4:15 and 6:00!!! (And the energy this evening was incredible!)
  • Today’s attendance was 9,147…this Sunday last year we had 5,769…that is a 58.5% increase in a year–IN ANDERSON! Like I said…ONLY GOD could do that!

We will conclude the series this coming Sunday with a message on how those who have crossed the line of faith can take the next step in their walk with Christ. And, of course, I am PUMPED about it!

Thanks to all who have prayed for this series and invited friends…for those who did invite friends and they didn’t come…or maybe they did come and didn’t receive Christ…DON’T GIVE UP! Jesus said in John 5:17 that God is always at work!!!

On a personal note…

I’ve got to be honest…and I am trying to choose my words carefully. This weekend was tough for me from a spiritual point of view. I didn’t sleep well…and I fought battles in my mind that haven’t been around for quite a while.

When God works–so does the enemy…and he has been working overtime to seriously discourage me. I’m not asking for sympathy but rather your prayers…I will tell you what most pastors will not say…ministry is hard and carries with it a spiritual aspect that many cannot understand. I struggled this week with discouragement–which may come as a surprise to many.

Every pastor struggles with this–EVERY PASTOR! I want to use what I’ve learned over the past week to encourage a fellow pastor who may have been going through what I’ve been through…keep in mind…

  • Stay faithful…God will fight your battles.
  • Stay focused on what God has called you to do…do not come down off the wall!
  • God is faithful…if you find yourself fearing the future then reflect on the past…He’s been so good!
  • Stay in the fight…one day you and I will stand in front of someone who’s assignment was much tougher than ours and He never gave up–neither should we!!!
  • The best days for the advancement of God’s kingdom are ahead of us…NOT behind us!

NewSpring–let me say this so everyone can understand it–I am HERE…I am dedicated to this church and to this community. I DO NOT EVER PLAN ON LEAVING…and the more the enemy tries to discourage me the more it FIRES me up and fills me with passion to continue to impact this area with the Gospel.

I know that some of you are used to pastors who come and then are gone in 22 months…NOT ME…I am not a hireling…God has called me to lead this flock…and I am trying my best to learn how to do this from the ONE who set the model in place…and no amount of discouragement or criticism is ever going to cause me to quit

NewSpring…I will lay my life on the line for you…I LOVE YOU!!!

I am more passionate about this church and the vision than I have ever been…it is UNDENIABLE that God is at work! Let’s continue to work together to do all we can to reach this community and this nation…I’m in, are you?
